been looking on good old facebook tonight and saw the story of Kenny the white tiger with downs syndrome.
normally stories like this pass me by, he lived in captivity and survived by keepers looking after him but would not have survived in the wild.
Only i red this one and it turns out it was a product of selective in breeding in captivity to create the 'perfect' white tiger!!
have i missed something....weren't they perfect before we came along and fucked about by making them fuck their siblings and offspring etc

interfe...ring in nature is not always good I knew a vet years ago who had been given a cat born with no cartilage in its ears so they flopped down .... a stump for a tail hence the name stumpy ... he bred her and the kittens had rib cage deformities and got worse and worse with each litter..why? |

I didn't realise tigers could have Downs Syndrome.
Yes, nature creates her own perfection and we like to mess with it and make everything fit an aesthetic that is not meant to be.
Daft dog breeding leading to deformities also make me mad. |

someone just pointed that out on facebook too. i guess its overlooked in domesticated breeds for some unknown reason.
i watched a programme once that explained that the ridgeback o a rhodesian ridgeback was in fact a form of spina biffada |

The deformity could well be a result of inbreeding but if it is then it's not Down syndrome. OR it could be Down syndrome but then it's not a result of inbreeding. |

It's a sad case of humans thinking they know better than Mother Nature, people wanting the perfect looking animal you'd think after all these years they'd know to leave well enough alone, I'm all for conservation, trying to protect what we have left of these beautiful creatures but in no way should we try to interfere with their natural breeding process other than to provide them with a safe habitat in which to rear their young, does make my blood boil, why do we feel the need to choose their mates for them it's wrong on so many levels |

I have a cat with various issues due to irresponsible, inconsiderate breeding intended to alter the look of the breed.
She's never known any different but it makes me sad she could be more comfortable if not for unnecessary tinkering.
Evolution works fine without us and we should leave things alone.
Persian cats are prone to problems with their eyes and their breathing and are prone to kidney problems.
Munchkin cats are completely unable to care for themselves and are dependent on their owners, all for the sake of looking "cute".
Most pedigree animals average a shorter lifespan than their mongrel counterparts which speaks volumes. |

He sounds like a great cartoon character. I'm already singing his theme tune in my head.
As for meddling with nature. Humans are a bunch of farking carnts sometimes. There is an argument for cutting Beagle's noses off and shit to see if we can cure colds, manflu and acne. But not for a laugh like with Kenny the Down Syndrome Tiger. |

I always wonder what makes us (humans) think we have soul rights over other species ?
I watch elephant diaries and it breaks my heart to see elephants orphaned by poaching ....but i also saw a case where they went off to rescue a baby elephant whose mother was trying to kill her own baby. They rescued the baby ,only to find out the baby was born blind ..So nature kicked in.
The mother knew her baby wouldnt survive so was doing what nature dictated. (not nice)
They took the baby back ,knowing that it would never survive on its own...
It died in the night after about a week .
Did "saving" that baby make a difference. ? I dont think so .
It was heartbreaking to watch, i was in tears.
But sometimes nature knows best, how ever good our intentions . |
