my 13 yr old son went out with his friend the other day both wearing poppies and an old dear came over telling them about losing her son and how nice it was to see two boys their age wearing them.I shall be wearing mine. |

That's a fair point and one I think is being addressed. My pin badge this year has 2013 in gold letters on it so I won't be able to wear it next year.
Also I was in argyle street Glasgow at the poppy stand on Saturday and a lot of their badges were year specific. |

I confess I wear my late Mother's poppy. It's seen better days but she served too. It'll probably see me out.

Poppy Scotland or any of the Erskine Hospital type charities."
I think you know I meant who were you commenting to.
People have the freedom to choose where to spend their money or who to donate to.
Having said that buying pins or badges from an official site means all profits go to them |

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular.
By all means buy 'stuff' from the various official and authorised websites but that 'stuff' costs money to produce.
The production costs reduce the net profit which goes to support the charities work. |

Unfortunately people like to have a visible sign of the good they are doing hence the need for merchandise.
I did race for life one year and got a medal for my efforts. I support the poppy appeal and get a poppy to show people I care. I support help for heroes and have a wristband for that.If iI sponsor a child they write a letter supposedly from them to show how my £2 a month has benefited her, if I sponsor an animal I get a cuddly toy version of it.
The idea of anonymous kindness is a good one but not one supported by many I fear. |

Do more people donate as a result of seeing other people wearing their poppies though?
How much is the visible display of support worth to the charity and to the people affected by losing friends and family?
The poppies may bring enough benefit in various ways to account for their cost. |

My Mr was at Tesco yesterday and some 'Asian' men started having a go at the old lady selling poppies, calling her a 'war-monger', etc.
Mr told them to bugger off to Afghanistan to give our snipers target practice. Don't know if that was right or wrong, but he couldn't stand by and let an elderly lady take abuse. We wear our poppies with pride. |

Defend her: Absolutely! People have a right to support causes they care about.
Bugger off back to Afghanistan: Probably not. Name calling only drags you down to their level.
I stand by the Poppy appeal because these men and women, despite their personal political _iews, support and supported the country.

When my late father in law was buried we all wore white poppies. He certainly did his bit (N Africa, Italy, Netherlands), but was deeply anti-war and never wore red poppies.
I find the almost compulsory poppy-wearing deeply unpleasant. TV presenters who try to out-poppy each other, the bigger the better.

I wear both a red and a white poppy.
I support our service personnel and the work the the British Legion does but I am also a pacifist who yearns for a world where the armed forces are no longer necessary.
I'm a realist and know it is deeply unlikely but I wear a white poppy to show my belief that war damages more than just the forces who get injured or die and the hope that we can learn a better way.
We must remember the horror of war, we must remember the horror of what we ask these people to do on our behalf, we must remember them when they return and are injured in body, mind or spirit, we must remember their sacrifice until the end of their life even if they are coping well or a d*unk drinking cider in the town centre and cursing the world. But also remember the others who are injured or die in war, who lose homes and families and even nations. |

I have a pin so it doesn't get lost or end up looking tatty before the 11th (and I always seem to injure myself on the pin on the traditional poppy!), but I make sure I donate every year and don't take a new poppy as I already have one |

I wear a poppy not because I like war, quite the opposite, and not because I want to glorify it either. I wear it, and buy a poppy (although I'm on number 5 this year!) because I am acknowledging what men and women have done in the past and are doing now, what sacrifices they have made.

It's nothing to do with being pressured to wear one, in fact that almost insulting. It's about showing the respect for the fallen on all sides of all conflicts.
It has nothing to do with politics or governments. It's basic human decency to show your thanks to these people because without ANY of them you might not be sitting in your nice warm house/flat, have food in your fridge or have the basic freedoms you take for granted. |

why do you think she wants you to believe she has respect? how someone chooses to show their respect has nothing to do with you. you can wear a poppy in every button hole you have, does that mean your respect is any better than anyone elses?
a plastic poppy does not mean you have respect, look at all the people that are MADE to wear them on tv. they arent wearing them through choice, they are wearing them through expectation.
Let her show her respect in her own way and you do the same |

I just said i'm not wearing a poppy, not that i never have worn a poppy.
Truth be told ive not genuinely come across a poppy seller in the streets this year so i do not have one to wear.
But when a user above dictated that i should wear one it actually made me exceptionally stubborn and think 'no'.
I donate money and its not compulsory to wear one, just because i physically do not show a poppy does not mean that i do not support the cause and the work the British Legion (and other charities do)
I will stand and mark the occasion for 2 minutes |

why people have to argue over who respects who more is beyond me and a bit sad in my eyes "
agreed..
bit like saying to someone 'x,y or z' is how long you should grieve over the loss of a loved one.. |

"How do you do that?
Now before I ask this question, everyone has a choice if they wear a poppy or not and I am not saying you should or not....but if you have so much respect as you say you have, what is the objection to wearing that poppy to show the people you are supporting?
I just said i'm not wearing a poppy, not that i never have worn a poppy.
Truth be told ive not genuinely come across a poppy seller in the streets this year so i do not have one to wear.
But when a user above dictated that i should wear one it actually made me exceptionally stubborn and think 'no'.
I donate money and its not compulsory to wear one, just because i physically do not show a poppy does not mean that i do not support the cause and the work the British Legion (and other charities do)
I will stand and mark the occasion for 2 minutes"
I didn't comment of wether you have ever wore a poppy before.
To be fair, you said you were not going to wear a poppy before the man answered you...so you now saying you are not wearing one because someone told you to is not quite true.
I think everyone has a choice of what they do and how they do it.
Thanks for answering anyway.
PS, it looks like they need volunteers to collect for poppy day at the BL you are a member of. |

"I've lost mine already. I don't seem to be able to keep one for an entire day.
The poppy pin badge is a good idea. "
Yes, but most of the money raised from the sale of these poppy brooches is pure profit and doesn't go to the Royal British legion, whereas the traditional paper poppy is, I believe, all for charity. Apparently, one brooch costing £45 is £40.50 profit !! |

"I just rise above it and thank you"
I would say racists have less right to wears a poppy, considering the many who died in the second world war, to stamp out a racist tyranny. |

The poppy doesnt care what colour anyone is as long as you put your money in the pot and wear it with pride.
Me and my 2 young girls have been out last week and raised over £450 and been out again since 8AM selling poppies hopefully we have beaten last years total of £620 for the 2 weekends leading up to Remembrance Sunday.
One nice old lady asked my daughter why she was stood out in the cold selling when she could have been out with friends playing etc My daughter replied with I do it because i can, For others who cant stand here and sell them anymore ! Not bad for an 8 yr old |

If you buy something from the offical poppy site 100% of the profits go to themselves. |

As with most parents im always proud of them but its at times like this the really do give you a warm glow knowing they have grown up with a sense of respect
As a treat they are both going to the Cenotaph tomorrow morning in London to pay respect and meet some of my old mob , listen to the songs and stories and tell their friends about these fantastic men and women of all creeds who were there during some of the darkest hours standing stag so others could sleep at night |

Clearly a couple with no knowledge of history or the composition of our armed forces...or our society for that matter. |

Am watching the British Legion Festival of Remembrance, and am wondering if there are ways for non-religious servicemen to commemorate. From what I see, every service of remembrance is linked to CoE church services, but there will be plenty who do not believe, or adhere to other religions. Is there an outlet for them, too? |

That's really good, thanks, the poppy as you know is about remembrance, but the money is put to good use supporting not just the old boys but the modern generation of veterans. And they have many needs, thanks again to yourself and your daughter. |

Yes because we're Christian, oddly enough. And it's amazing how many people start to believe in God when the lead is flying!
And the armed forces do have ministers for all the other major religions excluding Jedi! |

Other faiths are allowed to tag along but the whole thing is set up to reinforce the chain which links the Armed Forces to the Monarch and her position as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. |
