Over the rainbow, under the bridge

So 5 million are paid below a 'living wage' whilst MPs have claimed up to £200, 000 to cover their energy bills on expenses.

Are we really all in it together?

You've said before on another thread that we should go back to being ruled by a monarch. In effect getting rid of democracy. Do you really think that would solve any problems? And what of the current cost to the taxpayer in terms of the civil list? If there were a monarchy then that cost would grow exponentially.

Furthermore how would that solve the problem of 5 million people being paid below the cost of living.

As wonderful as it may seem to you to have the queen in charge I don't think you have considered the reality of how it might actually work.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

The reality is that some being paid the MINIMUM wage have so few hours that working doesn't pay. The Living Wage is still aspirational for many and employers are happy to offer below that and allow general taxation to top up the shortfall.

If work is to really pay then in work benefits should not be necessary.

I read the other day that Zach Goldsmith doesn't claim any expenses at all. Now I know he is a multi millionaire but I thought that was pretty admirable, especially for a Tory.

The problem with the living wage/minimimum wage is, apart from London, it takes no account of the different costs of living in various parts of britain.

The Living Wage does, the minimum wage doesn't. The Living Wage is paid at different amounts.

I know MPs get a bad press here and elsewhere but do we really want all our MPs to be selected from a group of people who can afford to live in London AND in their constituency?

Unless we pay their running costs, we'll have nothing but seriously rich people able to stand for Parliament.

I'm too tired to make a coherent response but this is indeed very true.

Of course we are not in it together but hasn't it always been that way? A living wage is a good idea on paper but not likely to ever work due to the difference in living costs from one part of the UK to the other and most employers will not voluntarally sign up. If the government really wants to get people off benefits it should think a little differently like to get people on a low wage discounts on their food, bills and clothing. Just thought.

That'd be an administrative nightmare, even worse than DWP at the moment.
