Boy’s toys for girls and Vice-versa?

So apparently Debenhams has now joined the likes of Toy’R Us and Hamleys toy store by displaying all their toys in a non gender specific way attempting to break down the social stereotyping where boys and girls should have different choices ,,,,,

Good or bad,,,,?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I think it's good, however it's still likely to look gendered as all the same types of toys will be displayed together. I'm still dismayed at Lego bringing out Lego aimed at girls.

Having two toddlers one of each sex does this mean I won't have to go from one end of the store to the other

Why?

I bought one of my nephews a tea set once, he was delighted. Young children favour the colours purple and pink but are taught very early that those are girl colours. Why should the household cleaning type toys be in the girl section? Why can't cars be in the girl section?

My _iew is toys are toys, my daughter had a work bench when she was little she loved it, I think we have a general attitude that its fine for a girl to play with boys toys but not for boys to play with girls toys, but here's a shock, IT WON'T MAKE THEM GAY so let em get on with it

.... I have no problem with children playing with any toy of their choice and I think as a concept making all toys none gender specifc is a good thing.......

But in reality I just think the shops involved are pandering to pressure exerted by a few adults who are unnecessarily hijacking political correctness on behalf of young children who probably don't really care about what shelf in the shop their toys comes from…

They learn very early that some shelves are for girls and some for boys and start to care very early on. Presented with the toys they behave differently until exposed to the gendered separation of toys.

Brighton - even Hove!

I bought my daughter an action man to offset the barbies but he ended up in the barbie tea party anyway. His machine gun was with the handbags.

So would you say that potentially solves more problems than it potentially elevates ?

There is a huge assumption by the droaning monotonous voices of Malcolm and Cressida (parents of Tarquin and Guinevere),that gender stereotyping is thought of as bad by most people. I think, to be fair, most parents couldn't really give a shit either way. It's all overpriced plastic dross and most of it will get played with properly for a few days and then get assimilated into the childs own little play-world anyway.

Potentially, yes. However television and internet advertising is now more important than what happens in a shop as so many toys are bought online.

my mother had 4 boys she wanted a girl, she ended up with 6 boys and me, I became the girl she wanted, I did the housework, shopping, cooking, so ended up gay.

so the toys you give your children, can shape their sexuality.

I'm just curious...

Yes. I'd like to see mixed groups playing. I have yet to see a girl in the Nerf or Hot Wheels adverts. I've yet to see a boy on the My Little Pony ones. I know girls that enjoy playing with cars and boys that like My Little Pony but both have asked if it's OK for them to play with them and keep it secret from the wider group.

Why try to fix something that don't broken? If its to make more room in the store then fair enough. Otherwise leave it be. All this fuss to make sure everything is equal and not dismissive to any other gender/race, etc is just pointless and stupid. No wonder why there are more reports about racism these days as I think most things are taken out of context and people think its racism. When all it is either a general insult or an old saying that modern generation don't understand. They'll be changing science/geography books next to say things are made by man and women. Complete waste of time, money and effort if you ask me. Yes equal rights should exist, but that is taking it to extremes.
