Eat your dog?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Its being reported a man has been rescued after being lost for 3 month in the Canadian wilderness where in order to survive he resorted to eating his pet dog two days the dog saved his life by chasing off a bear who invaded his camp and distroyed all his food supplies.

So the question is, would you eat your dog or indeed any pet in order to survive?

most people eat meat, baby piggies, baby baa lambs, 8 week old chickies,

most people even drink the milk moo cows produce for their babies, whilst their babies are taken away and murdered for meat.

an animal is an animal, heart, soul, cute eyes, so why would anyone bother which animal they ate?

Even though he and the dog would have both died of hunger?

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I think most, if not all, people would.

We're designed to survive and our minds adapt to encourage us to do whatever is necessary to do that, including cutting off limbs and eating pets.

It sounds gruesome but in a survival situation you function differently.

Humans are pretty remarkable really.

If there are no other options then the answer had to be yes. Not sure if it's true but my dad always told me that one of the reasons Scott didn't make it back from the Antarctic was because he refused to eat the dogs yet his rival explorer did.

There's gratitude for you

Unless the dog got killed somehow, then it would be a waste not to.

So are you saying you would rather die of starvation than eat your dog that would also inevitably die of starvation too once it had no doubt feasted on your corpse?

Luckily, most of us will never be in that position, so it isn't something we will have to consider, however the survival instinct would kick in, my animals are my family and I love them dearly.

I know for a fact if I was very weak and died, my dogs would eat me to survive.

In a way you could take this argument even further. If it was your infant child who was with you instead of your dog you could use the same argument. Your baby would not survive on its own so would all the prospective dog eaters eat their own baby?

"In that case you may as well eata baby. Especially if it was dead. Same pros and cons apply. "

I think the key fact is whether its alive or dead

there have been cases of people eating other people in survival situations and they haven't been prosecuted because the people were already dead, had they been alive i'm sure they would have

eating something that's already dead and taking its life is a totally different matter

I know full well I couldn't kill anything, not even a rabbit, but if it was already dead and I found it, maybe if it was a matter of life and death

If you have been on holiday in different countries, there is a good chance you have eaten goat, donkey, horse and dog meat,

It would not be advertised as such, but with spices and herbs, you wouldn't know what meat your eating, except for the description on the menu.

In the UK we have been eating horse, pony and donkey meat for years, without knowing, and I bet that no one would know the flavour of any meat, once it is processed and flavoured.

If we did know what we are eating in mince, burgers and sausages, I doubt most would ever eat them again.

I had a border collie for 13 years, I remember getting up one morning and him not coming for his breakfast, he had died through the night in his fave spot in the bathroom, to say I was devastated is an understatement, I had to call in work as I couldn't bring myself to leave him alone even though he was dead, I loved that dog and I missed him so much, there's nothing funny about the pain people feel when loosing a loved one, they are part of our family and we love them as such

an animal is an animal, heart, soul, cute eyes, so why would anyone bother which animal they ate?"

Couldn't agree more !

I agree with that too

I remember all the fuss everyone at work was doing when all the horse meat burgers story came out

If you eat meat what does it matter, I don't get how people think its ok to eat a certain type of animal but not another

its ok to kill and eat a cow but not a horse? what did the cow ever do to you?

and like most parents, you would do anything to protect your son,

if your son was dying of starvation and you only had your dog, would you let your son die? or put him before the dog?"

Exactly if the question was which one would you let die first your baby or your dog the answers would (hopefully !) be totally different

When people are truly in a life or death situation they will do a lot worse than eating their dog.

I have to wonder about the fairy-tale fluffy "I would rather die" replies........ whatever you like to believe about yourself goes flying out of the window when you have two choices and one is slow painful death.

Just from a quick google there are a fair few reported cases of people being in a situation where the only way they could survive was to eat the bodies of other people around them so I expect given the option between death and doggy dinner most people would choose to eat the dog. I would!!

I have 3 rescue dogs, they are my life, my family and my friends,

A dog is an animal, same as a goat, cow, sheep, cat, pony.

if you can eat one animal, you could eat any animal, whats the difference?

each and every one is a living sentient being.

I know my dogs would want me to survive, I have to be the alpha male in my pack, they respect me, and would die to protect me.

Survival is not about sentiment, its about need.

There have been loads of cases reported where people stranded miles from civilisation due to plane crash ship wreck etc or any other disaster situation That they turn to cannabilism to survive, so I think any animal pet or no pet would be the 1st to be sacrificed. And this comes from a meat lover and also an animal lover and pet owner

I've owned plenty of pets in my life, I've taken care of them to the best of my ability, and they've all led happy lives. BUT if I was stranded in the wilderness and the only hope I had to return to my family alive was to eat the dog I would. And I truly believe so would everyone else in that situation as much as they like to think they wouldn't the survival instinct would take over

You only have to look around the world and see what the native people eat. You eat to stay alive and what is available at the time. I mean how many rats do you suppose were eaten by the inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto and similar places during its time in the WW11. It seems all the people against the eating of Dogs are Dog owners, I fully understand where they are coming from, but as an earlier poster has said, you don't know what you would do until you are in that situation.

If all other food sources were exhausted then I can honestly say yes I would eat the dog, id imagine it would be an emotional thing to do and possibly feel physically sick whilst doing so but survival is survival, in the said case eating his dog obviously gave him an extension of life to the point of being rescued alive so it served its purpose

You had a 50/50 chance of being right.... and blew it.

Why not look up some extreme survival stories and see just what human beings are capable of when faced with the most extreme circumstances. The only reason any of us are here now is because deep down inside we, the human race, are driven to survive. It's easy to ignore that instinct when it is not being tested and thankfully it is extremely unlikely any of us here ever will be.

If you truly lack the instinct to survive, I'm sorry to say, your brain has a bit missing.

"I think most, if not all, people would.

We're designed to survive and our minds adapt to encourage us to do whatever is necessary to do that, including cutting off limbs and eating pets.

It sounds gruesome but in a survival situation you function differently.

Humans are pretty remarkable really. "

I agree. No one would like to think they would but starvation is nit simply hunger. We may say we're starving when we are merely hungry. I doubt if there is anyone here who has genuinely known starvation. In such circumstances it is not possible to really know how you would react.

I have the instinct to survive, I hope. And I like to think I do not have any of my brain missing, if it was me I would use it(my brain) to find other ways of surviving without eating my dog. Surely in a forest/jungle type of place there are lots of other sources of food to be found or hunted, I think eating the dog was an easy option and I also think that in some parts of the world dogs are not held in such regard as we do, I say we but I'm not sure after reading some of the opinions on here

what a load of twaddle..

there are several examples of humans eating humans to survive, its called survival..

its built in by and large to most of our psyche's and when push comes to shove it will come out ..

we are talking about an extreme situation, any sensible answer to the original question needs to be looked at from that perspective..

there are several examples of humans eating humans to survive, its called survival..

its built in by and large to most of our psyche's and when push comes to shove it will come out ..

we are talking about an extreme situation, any sensible answer to the original question needs to be looked at from that perspective..

sitting here with our 2 Collies, love them to bits but i'm not stuck in the arse end of nowhere knowing death is a day or two away..

fluffy little bunnies, hedgehogs even rat..

its all meat..

Yeah it's all meat, I still wouldn't eat my dog nor would I eat another person, that's not twoddle it's what I know about myself. Fruit and veg is the answer"

great if there is a supermarket handy, but that's another thread x

"I have the instinct to survive, I hope. And I like to think I do not have any of my brain missing, if it was me I would use it(my brain) to find other ways of surviving without eating my dog. Surely in a forest/jungle type of place there are lots of other sources of food to be found or hunted, I think eating the dog was an easy option and I also think that in some parts of the world dogs are not held in such regard as we do, I say we but I'm not sure after reading some of the opinions on here"

You just don't get it do you.

If you are in a forest or jungle with other food sources that you are able to hunt or forage for...... you are not likely to be starving!

taking the high moral standpoint and wrongly assuming that others don't love their pets as they have a different opinion from your own just indicates how narrow minded your position is..

"That's good to know, joking aside it's very traumatic losing pets particularly dogs, but me personally I would rather starve to death than eat my dog

But in doing so do you not feel you'd be abandoning your faithful companion to die alone in the wilderness?

I'd rather the dog ate me when I died to survive rather than me eat the dog.

I think most dogs would do ok in the wild, we domesticated them and would like to think our pooch couldn't possibly survive without us but in reality most would resort back to their natural instincts and do ok"

it's a known fact, someone's dog got lost on an island god knows where they thought it would starve to death and die big old useless soppy thing was still alive years later had been catching and eating goats

do you not think the guy in question had considered all those options before he started to starve to death..????

you only know 'about yourself' that which you have experienced and can make a judgement on, till you've been in his situation you don't know..

none of us do tbh, but I know its not something I would say na fuck it i'm going to lapse into a coma and feel my dog start to have a nibble..

I think it's worth mentioning many of the worlds recognised survival experts who’ve been asked to comment on this case conclude the man did the right thing in the circumstances….

I think its the mental connection here between a pet and its owner, ask the same question about a strange dog that passes you by rather than the one you have loved and cared for for many years and i'm sure you would get a different answer

At the end of the day none of us have ever been in the situation where we are starving to death so none of us can possibly know how we would cope

I can not imagine eating my dog but in a situation where I haven't eaten or d*unk for several days and insanity and delirium has set in...honestly who know?

"They eat dog in China regardless of been hungry "

They probably are hungry, that gap between breakfast and lunch would be filled nicely with a dog sandwich
