Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I believe in peaceful protest but I am having mixed feelings on this Greenpeace case.

What are your views?

Regardless of views on Greenpeace and the worthiness of the cause - it seems a number of the protestors we there last last year, had their fingers smacked and were told in no uncertain terms not to come back.

Rule #1. Don't fuck with the Russians.

This is what I am struggling with. At what point is the treatment unfair and who judges that when we are dealing with a different legal system?

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

There's a woman who has been protesting outside Menwith Hill for years. She's been moved on, cautioned, and arrested, yet she still does it.

I guess if you feel strongly enough about something, you'll take some risks.

I agree though - don't fuck with the Russians.

The fact Russia have no respect for the right to protest doesn't mean people shouldn't.

Greenpeace do a brilliant job at bringing things to the news that would otherwise be ignored.

Maybe these people knew the risks and to them it worth it.

If you take the risks and it doesn't work out surely the risk is you live with the consequences? I support Prisoners Abroad and the fight for fairness in justice in other jurisdictions but this group had been treated fairly the first time.

I've personal experience of dealing with the aftermath of some truly reckless and irresponsible behaviour by a Greenpeace protest targeting a rig I worked on ...... so no sympathy from me!

They were fortunate the first time around , playing Devils advocate with the Russians is fool hardy , ...those involved are all ' apparently ' inteligent people , and would have been well aware of the consequences ..no sympathy .

In the North Sea if you go too close to an oil platform they really don't like it.

I'd like to say they could have endangered the installation as who knows what sort of flammable liquids and gases are around, was all their equipment used to board the vessel intrinsically safe? But the Russians were shooting weapons so that blows intrinsically safety out of the water

The British government has been known to treat protesters with a heavy hand although they tend to be charged and released fairly quickly.

The French set explosive charges on and sank the Rainbow Warrior...

Greenpeace don't act in accordance with the law so must expect to be held to account on occasion, which in itself is bringing attention to what they are trying to achieve.

These people have risked their lives and liberty to protest against actions they see as fundamentally wrong to try and make the world a better place. Without people like this through history the world wouldn't be the place it is. Were the Suffragettes louts and trouble makers? Should everyone just sit back whilst governments and corporations ruin the natural environment for future generations in the name of profits?

If you are going to fuck with the likes of Russia, China etc though you'd better buckle up because it's going to be a rough ride.

I get this, I really do. Standing up to change the world takes a special sort of mindset. I'm just not sure that presenting the story as they are being treated unfairly is the way to go.

Maybe we should all remember that the French sent secret service assassins to New Zealand to plant bombs on and sink the Rainbow Warrior killing one of the crew. So the Russian action is not that extreme.

Thought it was nice of them to put them in little green cells , ..but seriously taking on such clandestine endeavours obviously calls for in-depth planning , so a risk accesment would / should have been made , that accessment in my view must take into consideration the third parties. ie the Russians who may well be seriously injured or killed in the operation or the rescue of the assailants/ protesters , on that basis why should the Russians treat them with any regard whatsoever?, protest by all means but be prepared to pay the price of your actions , ....*wags finger*
