The glass pane of my multifuel stove broke yesterday, and the estate ordered a new one for me. I figured it would be Monday afternoon at the latest that the replacement would arrive. Just got a call - end of next week. So till that time no heating. Thank heaven I got an immersion heater, so there will be warm water.
But the house will be absolutely freezing cold. Metre thick walls.
Anybody volunteering to keep me warm? (thermals are not really flattering )

"I was strongly advised not to do that - after I suggested that option.
The flu construction or whaddever makes it not suited as an open fire. "
Ah ok..... best to be safe |

Ok then, close the door, stick several layers of tin foil in the place where the glass was? Wont look as pretty but it'll work. "
if (IF) I were to seriously consider that, how would I affix the foil to the inside of the door? Blu tack won't work. |

Fireplace cement.
Better still, a sheet of galvanised steel cut to size?

Look - much as I like DIY-ing, I am a helpless woman all on her own and was asking to be kept warm, not farting around with galvanised steel!

It is not the cold that gets you it is the damp. A week is ok you should try four years. Not worth fixing the horrible system as the house is to be demolished so I use oil filled electric heaters instead. On the positive side my gas bill is zero, but you don't want to know about the electric. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I hate to say this Yoni but you may have to order a onesie since the men seem to be missing the need for a body bit. It will arrive by Monday and keep you warm.
Find a meet for the weekend in a hotel?

See? It takes a Sister to come up with something constructive. I do have a n early coffee-meet tomorrow in M&S - so that should warm my cockles (and his). |

I must say, not having contributed to this thread, it really made me chuckle about the male responses and "problem solving" ideas as well as the female "empathy based" ones. Cool thread (sorry no pun intended!)
When my heating broke down a week ago I got myself some mulled wine. Not perfect but at least I did not feel the cold as much. Hope you get yours fixed quickly. |

I bought a Lloytron 2000W one locally this afternoon, for £20. Sixes and threes, as Argos is a 40 mile roundtrip for me. But thanks for thinking of a practical solution *glares at the blokes* |

the customers in M&S will have their eyes opened! lol
We had no heating for almost 4 months a few years back. Boiler packed up a week before Christmas
As someone else suggested, a heater in one room. Keep all doors closed, hot water bottles in bed to keep off the chill and definitely a toasty onesie.
Hope you get your stove fixed asap x |

I know it's not what you want to hear, but...
If the glass is all straight edges and not curved, most glass suppliers will stock ceramic glass at a fraction of the cost of the manufacturers spare. Manufacturers just buy it in and sell it as a spare part after putting a huge mark-up on it. I got a bit for £5 instead of £30.
If you use the stove with the door open the chimney should work better as the door restricts airflow up the flue, most of the heat will go up the chimney instead of heating the room though. |

Ah - Mr Bollox. Duas habet et bene pedentes
Weak woman that I am, I feigned a faint while trying to lift that just under 1 kilo heavy weight, and was taken home by ambulance. "

No - it's a rather famous quote, meaning "He has two, and they dangle nicely". To do with Pope Joan
