We used to go in a tractor and trailer - in those days you could drive a tractor on the roads when you were 12.

Still all flummoxed?

Chomping is gathering wood for your bonfire. There was always someone with a wardrobe or a sideboard they wanted rid of.

And being a rural child we had the advantage of a tractor and trailer. One year we had the police called on us cos a gang of kids had a tractor and a set of chains and were pulling a dead tree down. The oldest was 12 and the youngest about 7. Fortunately the tractor driver was legal (barely) and the farmer had sent us out to dispose of an annoying tree in long acre field.

We had enormous bonfire then but it seems now that they're mostly private ones.

We also used to delight in our guys. Anyone's dad who wore overalls for work would save a worn out set and we'd get a battered bale to stuff them. And somehow we always managed to get our hands on some fireworks to put inside too...
