I have just had the most embarrassing morning if my life, a conversation between my self and a female colleague has left me being accused of being racist, I would see the funny side of it if it wasn't so embarrassing to have to explain myself to her, my boss and other members of staff
We were talking about who we fancy at our work place she threw one name at me and I said "nah don't like vanilla girls" as a joke she took it that I meant I don't like white girls, and told my supervisor about my racist behaviour so I have had to explain exactly what I ment by it and explain to all concerned my actions, right now I feel like handing my notice in, ill be glad when this week is over. |

I feel for ya buddy. I don't understand why so many people are so quick to take offence at the most innocent remark.
Surely you can just easily explain what vanilla means in this context ?
Hope it resolves itself |

why wouldn't you be allowed to not fancy white girls? It's not what you meant, but it not racist to have a preference for attraction. You might have said, no I don't like blondes, or gingers, or big chested woman, would she have reported that? |

I have and no further action has been taken but I hate the fact that I have had to explain to so many people what I ment, even if she had just said to me "what do you mean by that" I could have sorted it there and then |

"You could say you meant the word 'vanilla' to be plain and ordinary, which the girl you were speaking to wasn't. Get union support. "
It's done now, the person in question is a nice person and I was joking but I feel bad now that I said it me and my big mouth |

It's a bit like people saying you can't say blackboard anymore (which are rarely used in schools anyway now) as the 'pc brigade' won't allow it. Which is a common myth.
There's little you can do about ignorance sometimes.
Don't be embarrassed. You've done nothing wrong. |

If I were you and I were the slightest bit paranoid, I'd think they set me up. Considering you're not white and you didn't even start the conversation (or did you?) |
