Depends if they behave themselves and are still young enough to get away with it.
Where I used to live nobody would come as the house was in a pitch black corner lol. |

"I'll be blinds down, lights off, a pit bull sat in one window n a Rottweiler in the other!
Knock if you dare "
When living in Lincoln I used to answer the door with my big black rat or my boa, if they wanted sweets they would have to stroke them.
The look of terror used to amuse me |

Most of the kids here are bratty little arseholes who spent all summer shrieking and yelling directly outside my living room window, swinging from a young tree, risking breaking the branches.
They can fuck right off if they think I am giving them sweets. |

Personally this day and age I think it's wrong, isn't it informing kids that begging is ok ?.. yet another annoying and sometimes distressing intrusion we could all do without.. |

Im so glad its not only me that feels this way then
whether they are all nicely dressed up with parents or not it it is still annoying when you cant sit down and have your tea in peace as different sets of kids rap at the door
I certainly wont be answering it
Like someone said most of the kids in our area scream and shout and kick balls all over the cars and in the gardens so why come begging after that
Rant over...
Happy Halloween anyway

except of course it's a pagan thing to knock doors at Halloween. my lg will bee going trick or treating, and anyone who knocks my door gets home made cakes and biscuits because that's what used to be given.
do you all object to Christmas carollers begging for money in exchange for bad singing? much prefer the adorable outfits personal. rehearsals of their age |

i also think this. i. use to go round with them when they were little..they looked great dressed up...after they had finished all the kids wld tip their sweets out and all share and then we'd play duck apple. mine are older now so they dont do it. x |

Really worries and annoys me.
I live on the edge of a village, on a fairly narrow road with fast traffic. Usually there are quite young children out on their own and dressed in dark clothing that won't be seen by drivers - and with no adults!
Besides the sense of unwanted intrusion into my life, there is no way that I am opening my door to children on their own - if anything ever happened to them on their wanderings then I don't want to be on their list of contacts... Sad way to have to think but I just won't do it.
What stupid parents ever allow them out...?????

I object to anyone coming to my door to beg for anything, including carol singers and charity collectors.
I give when I want to and don't appreciate being put on the spot in my home with the intention of making me feel too awkward to say no.
I say no on principle now and make a point of supporting charities that don't hassle me. |

Kids where we live go out with their parents and only knock on doors of houses that have Halloween decorations up. We often leave a bowl of sweets on the step and the kids just take one or two and leave the rest for the next set of kids. It's good fun. |

"Isn't halloween meant for the kiddies "
Here Here!
People need to remember they were young once, and it is harmless fun.
As someone said carol singers do it and nobody complains, so if a cute kid dressed as pumpkin turns up at your door at 7 o'clock try and be nice.
It a masked teenager turns up and is rude and demanding then by all means shut the door on them and turn in the sprinklers but each to their own merits.

We've also had older kids come round- the type that kick balls against fences the rest of the year. I'm always friendly with them and it usually makes them behave better around our houses.
If you respect them and treat them nicely it makes all the difference. They often aren't used to getting respect from adults.
Treat them like shit.... well don't be surprised when they kick a ball through your window. |

Halloween is just another way in which commercialism and more worryingly Americanism is invading our lives. In America this is a massive holiday activity and the build up is akin to Christmas.
I do like a party or festive holiday periods but Halloween is just a gimmick. The OP is right we spend most of the year advising children to beware of strangers, rightly so but tonight kids will be encouraged to knock on doors and ask for sweets.........Humbug! |

My point was about commercialism not about the practice or process of what happens on the day.
I little note on the door saying "trick or treaters no thank you" should suffice |

My opinion (for what its worth) is trick or treat is wrong. Not only is it an unwanted north american import introduced here by the easily influenced it provides an opportunity for the knuckle dragger's to terrorise certain vulnerable people. The worst part of it for me is it encourages children to expect reward for very little, put a mask on bang on a door and demand a 'treat'. If you really want to see how pathetic it is ask the door bangers for a 'trick', I have in the past and have been met with nothing but blank faces. It could have been worse though as I know some have been pelted with eggs as a 'trick'! Its like the so called carol singers at xmas who bang the door then mumble one line of a carol and hold their hands out for cash! Well all I can say and will say if the trick or treaters bang my door is BUGGER OFF! |

I actually made a laminated sign to stick on the door and stuck the door knocker down with bluetack. I do have an excuse though I have a 2 year old that's in bed and I don't want her woken up by teenagers demanding sweets every 5 mins. |

Aaw lighten up its just fun for the kids. I live in a village and there's lots of kids and parents out, the kids stay local and only go to the decorated houses. No pumpkin = no knocking and that's a rule they all stick by.
I agree its a tradition that's come over from America same as prom nights etc but we've all been kids and I bet most of us went round knocking near bonfire night for a penny for the guy when we were kids!! |

im at work, and have been on halloween for years, so havent had to deal with it.
but when i am home for it, when it falls on a weekend, i am going to be prepared.
dip onions in chocolate, put some spinkles on and put a stick in it for fake toffee apples.
cover sprouts in chocolate and crushed nuts and wrap them in old ferrero rocher wrappers.
i'll give them a bloody trick!!
oh, btw, hate it.

I used to do it, so can't begrudge kids doing it today.
When I was 14, I do remember egging a chap's windows to buggery, because whilst he wouldn't answer the door to trick or treaters, he never minded his kids going out and doing it. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
We have two groups of friends that are accompanied by an adult. Pre-apporoved neighbourhood doors and we know what time they are coming. However, I will also answer to others. If they are older and not dressed up they get a telling off and a toffee.
We demonise kids too much. This is much better than the craze of my young days of knock down ginger - that happened all year. |

Yep I remember being a child and I had quite a good childhood. It did not include knocking on doors asking for a treat for no reason though!
Some people (mainly older) are intimidated and actually frightened by some of what goes on in the name of this imported custom!
There are plenty of ways for kids to enjoy Halloween without annoying others.
The 'Victor' comments are mile off target by the way! |

Some people (mainly older) are intimidated and actually frightened by some of what goes on in the name of this imported custom!
There are plenty of ways for kids to enjoy Halloween without annoying others.
The 'Victor' comments are mile off target by the way! "
Nothing stays the same, children need to interact, and it should be a joyous day for everyone, what a good day to educate both children and older people, lets hope new friendships are made, and fun is had by all, many older people never get a knock on their door, and are only too happy to make children smile. |

The "reason" is because it's Halloween and it happens once a year.
I don't know why people are so against it. It's a bit of community interaction, which for some elderly people can be quite good as many find they get very lonely in later life when friends pass away or family lives too far to visit.
In a world where children are growing up way too fast, shouldn't we be encouraging childhood traditions? |

What utter tosh, sorry but it is!
Every year there are news reports of older folk being intimidated by teens in masks demanding 'treats' and egging houses where they have been refused! I have had kids at the door who just stick their hands out expecting something... for what I have no idea. If that is your "community interaction" you can keep it. As for childhood traditions, you honestly think teaching kids to knock on doors expecting some little 'treat' for doing nothing is a good thing! It sounds to me like a 'tradition' from the Victorian times and when begging with menace was a popular past time.
If you want to make it a 'community' thing then organise an event in the local social space (church hall, scout hut etc). Do it the British way with apple bobbing and and stuff like that. Why on earth do we need to import stupid customs from north america! |

I don't engage in trick or treat in any way. I am not American. We have our own celebration at this time. It's called Bonfire Night. |

I have changed my mind about it.. I used to be not in favour and I would not say now that it is my favourite festivity but, BUT.... it is one of several foreign traditions that have been successfully imported into Britain and I think diversity is a cool thing. Plus, if it is contained that young children perhaps up to age 10 or so going round tehir immediate neighbours's houses and it is about some sweets that is fairly innocent stuff.
I do not aprove of teenagers demanding things from people they don t know. |

FFS. They're kids! They take the time to get dressed up in costume and go around their neighbours doors singing a song for a sweetie!! If it bothers you that much, close your blinds, turn the doorbell off and hibernate for the night! |

Wow! You're fun!
It's mostly harmless. Of course teenagers shouldn't be doing it but of course, they'll probably be doing something else. I didn't throw eggs...I used silly string and I was eight!
Teaching kids to beg? That's what you're worried about? You act like this happens everyday. It's not really begging if it happens once a year and the children make a effort with costumes and didn't someone earlier mention sharing the treats collected and then bobbing for apples? So the ideas you mentioned about the scout hall can easily be incorporated if everyone chips in. However, Judging by most people's reactions here, we're not really keen on interacting with children on any level. That's the only problem I'm seeing.
"utter tosh" Hehe, Brilliant! |

I interact with children on a daily basis and I'm very good at it. I love children. What I don't love is children who demand money on my doorstep. Children who deliberately stand in the road to stop you driving along. Children who are rude and abusive the year round.
Not every area has a pleasant experience of local children/families. Try not to put easy labels on people.
We also get the same at Christmas. Two lines of Good King Wenceleslas and then a hand held out for cash. |

I can appreciate that not everyone has had a good experience but aren't we above tarring everyone with the same brush? |

Exactly. I do get it that the children who make no effort whatsoever doesn't get a sweetie. (Had a lad last year with a hole in his jeans telling me he was a zombie, lol). But the bairns who take the time to get dressed up, sing a song and do my hoovering and ironing get some chocolate or lolly. |

Ok I open the door and refuse to give money to children who have simply bought a mask. Because that's all they want. What happens next? I've lived in this srea all my life. Most people are pretty good and friendly. But there are those notorious families which all around here know about. Those are the ones who do trick or treating, penny for the guy and Carol singing with menaces. No one else round here does. My brother's car had its back window smashed when he refused to give money.
I am not tarring all with the same brush. I just happen to know the people in my area.

We must be mr and mrs meldrew then as we have already had 4 sets of kids knocking on our door
Every time I put a mouthful of tea in my mouth someone different turns up
Its very annoying
I don't care if im miserable and yes we where young once but we where taught not to go house to house
If houses are all decorated up then that's different
We just want a quiet night

Just got in from work and it's started. Little kids out in the dark: some parents are mental and they're annoying me. Daughters boyfriend just rang to say he's outside as I've been ignoring the knocks! |

I love this time of year, where all night gangs of sweet and innocent children go knocking on my door for candied treats.
I save a fortune in python food
Seriously though, I've got a coupla bags of sweeties (trying not to scoff them all meself), cost me £2 and anyone that knocks will get one, including teens in masks - once they're gone, I'm not answering the door |

Just had the first lot round. I ignored the door but they didn't get the message because they knocked twice more.
I'm relaxing on the sofa and I want a quiet night too.
I don't have kids asking their parents for anything. I have no decorations up. They were inconsiderate all summer and their parents also didn't think enough to realise, or didn't care, that they were bothering me. They're getting nothing from me.
If that makes me a miserable cow so be it. I didn't want kids, I don't have kids and I don't want to be dragged into other people's family stuff without being asked. |

Our house is decorated and over the years our house has become well known for sweet and chocolate giving. They get a treat for taking the time and sometimes effort to dress up. One year when I got asked 'trick or treat?' I said 'trick' and the poor little sod looked really confused. He got double treat. We do apple bobbing too. As a pagan, I do my own thing too. I haven't given in to buying Halloween cakes and cards though! |

Done my rounds with my two.
Rules were:
Only knocked on houses with pumpkins and decorations.
Must say trick or treat and not just hold out bucket
Must say Happy Halloween
Must say Thank You
Must say Bye
And a good time was had by both givers and receivers
..... actually some over the givers seemed to be having even more fun! |
