He's one of the biggest icons but certainly not the greatest. That accolade should go to someone like Eddie Van Halen. He took what Hendrix did, expanded it and not only changed the way the guitar was played but also changed the way the instrument was built with his homemade Frankenstein guitar and modified Marshall 1959 SLP MKII amp... |

I was listening to Joe Bonamassa at Royal Albert Hall concert and he can play a guitar.
Eric came on as a "special guest" and the difference in class was amazing.

BB King was on TV the other night with Slash and others and can play amazing fast. He's got hands and fingers like a bunch of bananas and was picking superfast without missing a note. He's knocking 80yrs old too |

He was on BBC 4 right after the Tommy went off on Sunday night.
Saw a great Rory tribute band called "Sinner Boy" a couple of months back. They are well worth a watch if you see a gig near you |

Soooo many, for many different reasons .. .Styles differ greatly as well. So it will have to be a too 5 for me. . and in no order . . Joe Satriani, Dave Gilmour, Slash, Kirk Hammet (Metallica) and Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden). |

Hendrix was good but not the best. There are too many to mention... in no particular order Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Clapton, Beck, Page, Steve Vai, Rhandy Rhoads, Gary Moore, Ritchie Blackmore, the Dire Straits dude whose name I can't spell, John Fogherty, John Sykes, Steve Perry... the list of guitar greats, nay gods is endless.
If I had to pick one, it would be Jimmy Page not just for his ability to play guitar but his rock'n'roll, live fast, die young life style and attitude.

the yardbirds had 3 great guitarists pass through the ranks in clapton,beck & page,i also like gary moore,howard leese,dave gilmour,bill nelson,link wray,eddie van halen.
if i recall in his early days hendrix played in backing bands for little richard,james brown & the isley brothers,some great names to play with during apprenticeship eh?. |

I watched this video after seeing your post the other day , ..Moore must hit every note on the board in the piece inspirational stuff ...of the newer bands love the dual tonez from the likes of Avenged sevenfold and The Blackveil brides .. ....also love Mark Tremonti's tone |

Who was influenced by Les Paul."
And don't forget that Les Paul invented multitrack recording, without him modern music wouldn't sound anything like it does.
Interesting fact:
He couldn't stand the famous Gibson guitar that bore his name, in his opinion there were too many compromises, from the fretboard to the positioning of the pickups. He used to have Gibson send him rejected/second bodies and necks and route and build the guitars himself! |

Eric Clapton was the most skillful and best at playing the instrument, Hendrix and Pete Townshend were the best on stage showmen. Lowell George though was the most in tune with his instrument and got the best sound out of it. |

Peter Green sold his famous '59 Les Paul to Gary Moore for £60 and a Gibson SG. Moore used the guitar to record, among others, Still Got The Blues. It's now valued at over £1,000,000. |

He's a drummer!
Don't know why Slash gets so many mentions, he's more of a pentatonic whore than Kirk Hammett! They both bore me to tears, as does Clapton these days.
Mike Stern could play the arse off most mentioned here and he's far more versatile too.
The best guitarist currently doing the rounds is Guthrie Govan, by a country mile!
Look up 'Fives' on YouTube, then tell me if Slash could play it. And Guthrie doesn't just shred either, before that accusation is thrown around. |

Randy rhoads like hendrix died an early death,only 25 yrs old the guitarist with ozzy osbornes band was on reckoned to be on verge of what could have beeen greatness when the plane he was in crashed,the pilot was the tour bus driver for the ozzzy band who was fooling around whilst flying and found to have heavy traces of drugs in his body,rhoads was clean.

Not a huge fan of either Sabbath or Ozzy but Tony Iommi has to be up there considering his missing fingers, but the best I've ever heard was the late Randy Rhoads, man I wish I could even hold a guitar like that guy did. |

Yeah. This is pretty much who's the best rock guitarist isn't it?
I'm not a huge fan of jazz guitar, but there's people playing that form of music who absolutely blow rock guitarists out of the water.
Somebody like Martin Taylor is doing stuff on a whole higher level. On his version of I Got Rhythm, he's effectively playing three distinct musical parts on one instrument, at the same time. He's mimicking a walking double bass line on the bottom two strings, throwing in little comping chords like a piano player would do on the middle ones and improvising a melody on the top ones. Ludicrously hard.
I once say a documentary on gypsy jazz and there were little gypsy kids, brought up in that tradition, who were way ahead of any rock guitarists.
It's not music I love, but it's incredible stuff.
I prefer people who play with feel really. There'll always be someone who can play faster, shred more, be more flashy. That's why BB King, Peter Green and Glen Campbell would be my favourites.
The guy I love too, is Dave Rawlings. He's Gillian Welch, a brilliant country/folk songwriter's guitarist (and partner). Just plays a battered old Epiphone acoustic, but has touch, feel and an ear for unusual notes. His stuff fits the music and takes it to other places whilst always being sympathetic to the song. Amazing player. |
