Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria |
Whenever I've read Moody's posts, I always thought that Shoeburyness was a made up place like Arse End or My own little world or some of the places we put as our home towns (I've no idea why, it just looks like a invented name to me) 'twas only yesterday I read a post by another person from Shoeburyness I realised it was an actual, honest-to-goodness town!
Anyway, that's been my "Every day is a school day" moment for the weekend - what's been yours? |

Gosport |
It does sound like a dream destination for all the followers of Imelda Marcos. It is definately a real place, I spent about 3 years paying it regular visits for work on a project that contributed a lot to my grey hairs. |

"According to Douglas Adams Meaning of Liff Shoeburyness is also the vague uncomfortable feeling you get when sitting on a seat which is still warm from somebody else's bottom. "
now imagine that in the context of swinging |

Go motoring on the A13"
Nah sea front way better than a13 , well except on a Sunday afternoon in summer when it's the 127 then the tail end of 13 |

If you ever have to go to Shoeburyness
Take the A road, the okay road that's the best
Go motorin' on the A13
If you're looking for a thrill that's new
Take in Fords, Dartford Tunnel and the river too
Go motorin' on the A13
It starts down in Wapping
There ain't no stopping
By-pass Barking and straight through Dagenham
Down to Grays Thurrock
And rather near Basildon
Pitsea, Thundersley, Hadleigh, Leigh-On-Sea,
Chalkwell, Prittlewell
Southend's the end

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Essex also has a real place called Fingeringhoe.
Caz, are you saying that Arse End is made up? I've been up your way and it seems perfectly feasible that it might really be called Arse End given some of the other real names.

I did wonder if you had an exploding pork pie on your hands.
You've got a testing range near you haven't you? If the wind is blowing your way the sound may be amplified.

Most of the names in this part of Essex are of Saxon/Viking origins... Bread and Cheese hill in Thundersley is a corruption of an old weapon called broad and sharp... Thundersley is to do with Thors land...
I got all that from reading Bernard Cornwall who has based some of his books round hereand was raised in Thundersley.... |

The name always reminds me a Ian Dury and the Blockheads lyric, & I can't believe they weren't mentioned above; - get some culture, you lot!!

And there was me thinking bread and cheese hill was named so because of the pub on it |

Had a love affair with Nina
In the back of my Cortina,
a seasoned old Hyena
could not have been obscener
She took me to the cleaners
& other misdemeanors
but I got right up between her
Rum and her Ribena.
So, you ask Joyce and Vicky
If candy floss is sticky
I'm not a blinking thickly
I'm Billericay Dickie
and I'm doing very well.

Coincidently we have just paid a visit today to Shoeburyness with a non swinging friend who used to be stationed there years ago when it was a garrison town .She says its all posh now , and didn't want to go in the shoe pub cos it had gone all upmarket .She did show me the area near the beech huts towards Southend that used to be a big dogging area .

I bought a lot of Brandy
when I was courting Mandy
took eight to make her randy
& all I had was shandy
another thing with Sandy
what often came in handy
was passing her a 'mandy',
she didn't half go bandy!
So, you ask Joyce & Vicky
If I ever took the Micky
I'm not a blinking thicky
I'm Billericay Dickie
& I'm doing very well.

"It's a song by Ian Dury & the Blockheads called; Billericay Dickie; - it put Shoeburyness on the world map!!
"
I think you'll find that Shoeburyness was already on the map. Along with all those other places that have never been mentioned in a song.
Not like Waikikamukau which is really hard to find on a map. |
