if we take the right squad then who knows how we will fair.
take:
hart
jags
cahill
gerrard
for their experience
and then add youngsters
thownsend
berahino
morrison
rodwell
maybe even ince
kids play with no fear.
let them go and express themselves.
Neville is doing a wonderful job trying to temper hodgesons natural defensive tactics and with them both trying to mix a solid defence with flair in attack, it COULD be our best tournament for a long while |

we were lucky to get the win last night as we could have conceded a cpl of slopping goals quite easily if the polish had a decent striker.was a good game but with our defence or should i say lack of one we dont have a chance of winning |

If we had a couple of natural strikers we could and should have scored 6 last night!
But we are still a long way behind brazil, Germany, Spain, holland, Argentina

Where's Wilshere and Sturridge or is that a given? |

yeah, i think they would be a given, as well as welbeck and bains. cole could be left at home and take the young lad from southampton as cover on th eleft (shaw is it?)
we still have a problem at right back as the 2 candidates at the moment are both too attacking for my liking, and not very good defensively, but there is 8 months yet |

We might as well be attacking. We don't have much defensive cover. |

dunno.
we have 2 players in every position and a number that can fill in in an emergency.
its in the sticks we only really have 2 options.
foster and hart, as any other keeper is untested, and thats a failure on the managers part.
across the back we have
baines/cole/shaw
jagielka/smalling
cahill/jones
johnson/walker/richards
with both smalling and jones able to fill in at RB if need be, so the defence isnt as big a worry as it may seem.
up front we have
rooney/sturridge/welbeck and thats without the young lads scoring too, and any of those mentioned can work perfectly well as a single striker at the point of the team.
i thinl what the last 2 games proved was there is still a place in international football for 4-4-2 |

if it was my 23 i would take
keepers : Hart,Forster,Ruddy
Defenders: Johnson,Walker,Baines,Cole,Cahill,Jagilka,Smalling and Jones
Midfielders: Lennon,Townsend,Gerrard,Lampard,Wilshere,Carrick,Milner,Gibbs
Strikers:
Rooney,Sturridge,Welbeck,Walcott
I would take a 3rd left back and you could easily play gibbs or cole left midfield if needed.....

i have long advocated playing baines as a left winger.
he seems naturally fluid going forward, and cole really is better at defending, but i reckon they would compliment each other.
same on the other side.
johnson would make a great winger, although now we have lots of options there anyway, its a moot point |

If you think that is bad you should come over here when we get to a major championship, the country comes to a standstill ...win, lose or draw |

actually fall me super cool.. i like england in the 4-2-3-1 formation...
gerrard and Carrick/Wilshere as your 2... then walcott - rooney (as the "10")- welbeck
and sturridge up front..... |

It's more 4-1-2-1-2 anyway! Thought Carrick had a terrible game last night though, he's no Michael Essien! |

Overall it was one of England's better performances and against a live opponent who wanted to win.. Very entertaining game... Seemed as though lewandowski carried the demons from the last time he faced hart.. his prematch comnents suggests so, at least.
I think if the draw is relatively kind, we can make the semi finals....gives the flags a decent bit of air time |

Glad they weren't as 'live' as Ukraine, that would have made an arse-twitching 90 minutes if we'd needed to win that to go through automatically! |

As the saying goes you have to be in it to win it. Will we? Don’t think so. Can we? Yes we can. On our day we can beat any team, the problem is we would have to play at 100% in every game and even then it might not be enough. Stranger things have happened xxx |

Lol, goes with the territory. They're a decent side with a very hand striker... We're decent side with perhaps a few more known players.. A decider like last night will always be nervy..but I felt we had a decent balance between defence and offence...and looked far better going forward than in recent times.. Onwards and upwards, with a lil arse twitching on the way! |

"With a four hr time difference I'm more interested in what time of the day the matches will be..."
They're 5 or 6 hours behind us so the games will be 10pm & 2am- Ish??? Late nights at home & in the pub - perfect!
Some of our commentators make me laugh; they're predicting that England should reach the last 16 at least or maybe the 1/4 finals ................ & the draw hasn't even taken place yet!! LOLZ

Brazil is currently 4 hours behind us (it'll be the same for the World Cup as that'll be BST too) and the majority of games are at 17:00 BST and 21:00 BST (some are at 20:00 BST and 23:00 BST).
So 9pm, 1am (Midnight and 3am) kick-offs. |

so all of the times showing are uk....
so 5pm, 8pm and 11pm kick offs for first round games....
2nd round and quarter-final games will be 5pm and 9pm kick offs...
semi-finals will be 9pm kick offs...
and the final will be sunday night at 8pm

No team from Europe has ever won a World Cup in South America. I can't see us getting past the quarter finals.
I don't remember worst centre back pairing than Jagielka and Cahill top strikers will exploit this. After this tournament we should retire everyone over 30 from the squad. |

Everyone should use Zulu Time. Makes much more sense.
On a more practical note, I see prices of c£7,000 to go and watch the first few rounds + more in the (unlikely) event England go any further.
Will ordinary fans be able to afford/ get time off from signing on to go? |

For a long while there was a tale in the Scottish media about a contingent of the Tartan Army who had 'liberated' a submarine and set off for Argentina '78.

"If we're drawn with two South American teams in our group, which is quite feasible, then I don't fancy our chances of getting out of the group, I'm afraid! "
no chance of that happening.....
in the group stages they would have teams from the same confederation with the exception of europe
pot 1 will be brazil.. and the next 7 highest teams in the fifa world rankings.... Spain, Argentina, Germany will make 4 of the eight...
this is where the fun starts... if they go purely on the rankings the next 4 tomorrow should be Columbia, Belgium, Uruguay (who have to play in a play off against Jordan) and Switzerland....
yes, Switzerland.....
so you have a 2nd "european pot" that is going to contain holland, italy, england, Russia, potentially france, and potentially portugal,
the african, and rest of the south american teams will be in the same pot and the lowest ranked european team
the asian teams will be a pot with the north american teams...

It was tense but in a far nicer way than previous qualifying campaigns. We at least looked like the game was there for the taking, given the rub of the green...in an almost mixing my metaphors kind of way!! |
