There are four stages of life and two periods of time where you are nothing and everything.

4 & 2

Honestly, it is 42 because of his age when he had first child, made sense to me when I found that out.

It was the meaning of life and everything when my son was born!!!

Because the pan dimensional beings who designed deep thought to find the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything, never actually specified the question.

Plus the Golgafrinchan ships crashed on prehistoric earth and disrupted the computer matrix.

Consicse enough?

Two physical constants in the universe are the speed of light and the diameter of a proton. It takes light 10 to the minus 42nd power seconds to cross the diameter of a proton.

Well on a google message board he wrote

"I am new to this group so bear with this beginners question:

Why is the answer 42 ?

Has Douglas Adams ever explained this ?

The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an

ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations,

base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk,

stared into the garden and thought '42 will do' I typed it out. End of story.

Best,

Douglas Adams

Er, how do you explain the fact that he wrote that 42 was the meaning of life, the universe and everything in the 80s but didn't become a father until 1994

I didn't think he'd had children when writing Hitchhiker's.

Me neither. Thought he wrote it in the early 70's when he was a lot younger than that.

Prefer my explanation anyway

It is why in 1935 Boots chose that as the launch name for their Boots no.7 skincare range
