"He really should just grow old gracefully. He ruined the Olympic opening and closing ceremony and the jubilee concert"
Totally agree. I wonder if he watched those performances afterwards and critiqued himself? |

Sir. Sir Paul McCartney. Show some respect.
But his music's shite and irrelevant and has been for many a long year. But if that's what he wishes to do, good on him. Just a shame that such as Radio 2 inflict it upon us. |

Ah yes, the frog chorus. I wondered how long it would take.
Who do you think came up with, and played the intro to WMGGW.
Imagine is a dirge, not in the same league as Hey Jude. McCartney had a massive influence in The Beatles, much more than most people realise.
Must admit his music has gone downhill though

certainly anyone who has been in the game as long as he has will have had highs and lows performance wise..
50+ years and still selling, think that says something..
as for the Beatles, where they led a lot of others followed..

There was a cartoon in Private Eye called 'The Importance of Grammar for Paul McCartney' and in the first pic there is a miserable looking crowd as he says 'And now for a song I wrote yesterday' and in the next pic, the crowd is happy as he says 'And now for a song I wrote - Yesterday' |

And I dont get this airplay thing. At the moment Christina Perri has a brilliant track in the charts called Thousand Years. Not my usual type if music but brilliant non the less. Im a capital radio listener and they refuse to play it as its not there genre, exept in the chart show which I dont agree with

Its true that there would have been no Beatles without McCartney. His song writing partnership with Lennon has stood the test of time. Towards the end of the Beatles, McCartney was far more prolific than the rest of the band and wrote some great music. So there is no denying his ability at the time.
I liked some of the wings stuff. But he has not written anything decent for years. I bought Flowers in the Dirt, which he wrote with Elvis Costello and that was an OK album.
Lennon described McCartneys music as simplistic, making anything rhyme... 'june and spoon' music I think he called it. Lennon also described McCartney as a musical accountant...
I think its sad that he is killing his own legacy by releasing tripe and performing when his voice has clearly gone.
I guess his ego and need to be loved wont allow him to quit. |

Why should he quit? Music is music. If you like it buy it, if you don't, well don't.
Some people liked the Beatles and some didn't. Music is all about personal preference. No need for anybody not to write it whether that be Paul McC, or Chico, or any young kid sitting in their bedroom with a guitar.

The Beatles never did it for me, or any of the solo stuff, that said, I can appreciate the lasting legacy and influence they have had on music and society. SPM will always get a/ recording, b/ sales and c/airtime, his success and back catalogue has earnt him that. He is writing and playing the music that he wants to, the same way we all choose who we buy and listen to. His new music ( and old ) I simply don't want to hear and change the station that plays it. Choice. Retire or not, I am totally indifferent to it, too much music and opinions that I DO want to listen to. ( I do get the irony as well, that I am commenting on this!! ) |

The only not overly talented beatle was Ringo, the other 3 went on to have huge musical careers after the beatles, just not in same style. They all contributed to the beatles legacy. Lennon and Harrison never got a chance to run their reputation into the ground though. McCartney is still a nation treasure though.
Yes Harrison very talented, ever listened to the travelling wilburys? Bloody fabulous music |

I agree that The Beatles shook the world with what they did and to go from their early material like SHE LOVES YOU to their later material which was very different, they covered a lot of ground.
Personally i like their earlier songs. |

I wouldn't buy his single or album for two reasons:
(1) He's a rubbish singer.
(2) He gave an exclusive inter_iew to the Sun.

I saw him live years ago and he was brilliant. He could still sing then too, still can on a good day although he doesn't have too many of those these days.
Although I personally wouldn't go and see him now, thousands and thousands of people do, so why should he quit.
Most of the negative posters on this thread will be in their seventies one day. How will you feel if someone tells you to give up something you love doing, just because they think you're past it?
Oh, and he could still give me bass lessons anyday.

Not really as your post is about if you would buy his material now, not if his personality or being makes you feel creepy. Agreed , in a hundred years they will be talking about the Beatles and NOT Paul McCartney in 2013 which is what was said. The thread is not about him as a Beatle but of the relevance of him and his new album of today |

So your argument is irrelevant then
Not really as your post is about if you would buy his material now, not if his personality or being makes you feel creepy. Anyway, i have no personal feelings either way about Cliff Richard, my mum is the fan so have heard plenty about him. McCartney is a has been who has been living off his Beatles status ever since they split.
I'm sure that in a hundred or so years time, when The Beatles and McCartney are still being discussed, YOUR opinion about him being a has been will be _iewed with the seriousness it deserves.
Agreed , in a hundred years they will be talking about the Beatles and NOT Paul McCartney in 2013 which is what was said. The thread is not about him as a Beatle but of the relevance of him and his new album of today"
I'm sorry, but you called him a has been. His legacy is assured, he is the most successful musician in history, he will never be a has been, and that is the remark I was replying to. I'm well aware of the theads context |

It sounds like wishy-washy middle of the road 70's-80's crap!!
The guy should look at his olympic & 'Queen' performances & whistle to the dog for his slippers or, failing that, if he really does want to carry on playing;
just don't sing!! |

"Why should he quit? Music is music. If you like it buy it, if you don't, well don't.
Some people liked the Beatles and some didn't. Music is all about personal preference. No need for anybody not to write it whether that be Paul McC, or Chico, or any young kid sitting in their bedroom with a guitar.
Live and let live"
Oh!
I thort it was called 'live and let die '??? |

My claim to fame is that I have met Paul and Linda (RIP) in their local when I was having dinner with friends in the 80's. In the pub there was a sign saying no photos etc, but he was very willing to chat as he sat at the bar. I thought he was lovely a perfect gent infact and both were very down to earth.
As for his music I loved Wings better than when he was in the beatles. |
