A man who was 37 stone had to pay for two seats on a flight because he was so big.

The first seat was in row 17 and the second in row 19

Maybe it was one of those king whatshisname's tests to see if he really wanted to fly?

I'd assume that would be due to moving another passenger to a different row rather than removing one of his bum cheeks!...

Bad enough on short haul but on a long haul flight would be torture!

Well yeah, I suppose it is but look at it from the airline's perspective.

They're there to make a profit and due to this man's size they shouldn't be forced to forfeit a seat. I think they're right to charge him for two seats if that's what he needed, especially if they needed to remove the armrest between them and supply Vaseline and a shoe horn to squeeze him in!...

I can appreciatte them selling him two seats because he is taking more room and the reasons why.

If you read the OP the seats are in different aisles so he can't possibly sit in them as even someone who is 37 stone would never reach.

Hence why I said in this case it seems it is all about money.

Lifes not fair. I don't really know what 37stone is but if memory serves I was about 10stone so he's nearly 4 of me . If i were 4 of me then id expect to pay more. Obviously whoever it was that couldn't fit in their allotted seat would be bumped into the different seat. Computer systems don't always have programming for adults the size of 4

Imagine at check in they arranged two seats but had none left together,so would have to move someone or seat him in a suitable area when boarding

However I wouldn't wanna be stuck behind that in an emergency

Surely the baggage hold was more appropriate

tbh, dependant on which airline, it doesnt really matter which seat is booked, as most sit anywhere anyway.

have only came across aerlingus that sticks rigidly to a seating plan.

which is what makes me laugh about ryanair.

people say they treat you like cattle and heard you onto the plane, but people act like cattle so they can get to the front of the queue to board.

fekkin retards! lol

oh, and on ryanair flights, the seats are so small, even small set passengers have to book 2 seats lol

" seems it is all about money.

"

i think it is all about money and the airline wishing to recoup the extra money that they have to spend on fuel due to extra weight being on the aircraft. They have been doing this for years with luggage so why not people ?

Not sure which airline it was but with some you can pay a charge to pick which seats you are allocated therefore ensuring both seats are next to each other

Yes as they probably did not have two seats together to sell to him but once onboard would have moved another customer in order to make sure he had two allocated seats next to each other.

PS...sadly the staff didn't do this for the man and gave him two seats on the way out with someone in the middle of them and one seat in aisle 17 and one in aisle 19 on way back even though he "says " he told the check in staff that he had bought two seats for himself

It's a bit shit really. I do think larger people should have to get two seats as it's not fair for the person next to them. I have been in that position and it's not nice. The airline should be more sensitive though.

Although it sounds like it was him that took it to the papers... in which case he's a daft sod because now everyone knows.

were there actually any two seats left together when the gentleman came to check in .. most people these days check in online long before the flight is due to leave and a lot choose to select their own seat whilst doing this so if by the time the guy checked in there were no 2 seats left neighbouring each other I'm not sure that there was anything else the staff could do ?

Not sure if this is a joke or not but there deffo needs to be some kind of price scaling for obese people across the board. Why should someone have to share their airline seat with someone else spilling all over them. Likewise with other forms of transport, cinema, theatre etc......Also why should a size 10 women pay the same price for clothing as a size 22+ when it probably has twice the material and work involved etc.......

its because of the weight limit on each seat, all because you fit in one chair if you exceed the weigh limit you have to pay for another seat even if it sits empty as they cant sell it anyone else

To be fair I'm certainly not 'fat bashing' but you're OP has raised the question of obese people on airplanes and other firms of transport. When someone is causing you discomfort in 'your personal space' ie your seat then its wrong. If they sat smoking or farting for the duration of flight then complaints would be made!

Well it has certainly turned into a fat bashing thread. Size 22 clothes are generally twice the price of size 10, and if I am unlucky enough to be sat next to a slim to average gentleman on a flight I generally find he deliberately spreads his legs and rams an elbow on the arm rest next to me, just to make his point, that being, I should be a hermit. Sorry did I say gentleman... I would gladly pay more not to be judged and insulted.

so, by weight, which would exclude extremely fit weithlifters and bodybuilders from getting on your exclusive plane for the beautiful slim people?

well glad for you.

would rather stick with who i fly with and not be judged than use your exclusive airline that calls for everyone to be perfect or you get charged an 'abnormal' tax.
