or are some covers better?
Im a big fan of Radio one's 'live lounge' and stumbled across James Arthur's cover of Miley Cyrus 'Wrecking Ball'.. to me it was just jaw droppingly beautiful.
So do you think there are any covers that have been done which are better than the original? |

Wrecking Ball is currently my favourite song. It's actually really good but she messed it up with the video. Brain dead and can't think of a good cover. Just covers where the original was better. |

Some covers are far superior to the original, the Jeff Buckley cover of Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) springs to mind instantly.
Others need to be consigned to the gates of hell, anything by the cast of Glee springs to mind! |

I generally tend to prefer the first version I hear of a song whether it's the original or a cover.
One of my favourite covers is Rufus Wainwrights Across the Universe...but it's not better then The Beatles version |

Here's the link to James Arthur singing Wrecking Ball.
Song with beautiful lyrics ruined by a trashy video i think, but James adds the X Factor (like what i did there ) to make the song mean something |

Somewhere in North Norfolk |
Yes but I can't think of any off the top of my head!
Some covers are as good as the originals, just in a very different style.
I also loved the Gary Jules version of Mad World. I like Leona Lewis doing Run. The Counting Crows version of Big Yellow Taxi.
Mind you, my taste in music can be dodgy at the best of times |

Love what live lounge throws up sometimes.
30 seconds to mars do Lady Gagas bad romance - sounds like a completely different song
Katherine Jenkins does Bring me to life (evanescance)

Lol, Cohen did an incredible job writing it but his recorded version is somewhat an acquired taste don't you think.
One thing that makes me laugh about that song is when my children's school choir sang it at a Christmas play, me thinks the person who selected the song was a little naive as to its true meaning... |

Weezer have done some great covers, mostly tongue in cheek. Are you familiar with StSanders and the Kiss Shreds video? Weezer even managed to cover that live!...lol |

GnR's Spaghetti incident is better than I used to give it credit for, Ain't it fun, Black Leather, Human Being - all better than the originals.
I also think the Hellacopters version of Gimme Shelter is better than the Stones and Backyard Babies Pet Semetary better than the Ramones. |

Weezer do like to throw in covers at their concerts, I saw them recently and they did a radiohead cover. I don't know which one as I am not familiar with their work but it was very good.

Some of the best songs in history were covers, better than the originals:
Eric Clapton's Crossroads was Robert Johnston's I think.
Jimi Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower was Bob Dylan's.
Isaac Hayes' Walk On By was Burt Bacharach's.
And then there's Ice Cube's Check Yourself which was over a reinvented backing of Grandmaster Flash's The Message.
Etc |

some fantastic cover version - Nirvana covered Love Buzz and The Man Who Sold The World along with some others, Lulu tried covering Bowie's track and failed miserably, Madness did a great cover of Labi Siffre's It Must Be Love which was good, Pet Shop Boys killed U2's Where the Streets Have no Name Jeff Buckley did an amazing cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, Soft Cell did a great job of Tainted Love, Marvin Gaye did I heard It Through the Grapevine...so I guess it's a difficult call? |

Fuck, that's awful! The first time I played my stepkids' Jeff Buckley's version, they cried. I suspect they would cry for entirely different reasons at that abomination. I didn't even get as far as what I imagine was the typically over-wrought Euro-metal guitar solo!
