Who remembers when local councillors did the job because they had pride in their communities,,and all they had was expenses for bus fare and a sandwich,,now,it comes with a salary and a gold plated pension and an expense account..whats gone wrong??,,and people wonder why their council tax is so high,,wonder no more!. |

It's another shitty job, like being an MP, where you're on call and in the public eye 24x7 and no matter what you do or how well you do it, there'll always be plenty of armchair critics. |

Bizarre.
I have two friends who are city councillors. Both have full-time jobs and give up the vast majority of their free time to genuinely trying to help their constituents and city they love. 5-7 evenings and most weekends, and they don't get half what they want to get done.
If your local councillors are freeloaders, vote them out.
This relentlessly negative narrative about politicians is becoming ridiculous. |

I couldn't afford to be a councillor and do it well. Paid work would have to come first. You can't job share it, although that has been suggested more than once.
I have sat in council chambers before and after payment was introduced. I saw the, largely, older men that had jobs who slept through the committee meetings and would wake up in time to interject to drag the debate back and get the payment to kick in. I have seen the focus of those that do it well and with a passion. I have also seen the careerists who use it as a stepping stone.
Turn out is so low for local elections and then it's a thankless task as everyone knows they can do it better. But don't. |

I know that - I work with a lot of very talented volunteers and I volunteer myself. Motivation for the task is what is important and some have the motivation to do the job well but simply cannot afford to do it unpaid.

I know that - I work with a lot of very talented volunteers and I volunteer myself. Motivation for the task is what is important and some have the motivation to do the job well but simply cannot afford to do it unpaid.

And again just because you can't there are a lot who have no problem doing but then they don't spend hours and hours on a forum I guess. The trick is to understand we are not all the same and some people can do lots more at an effective level than others. |

My ex business partner was a councillor and rose to being a cabinet member - it definitely consumed his life and affected our growing practice to the point I left due to his lack of commitment - but he had a passion for it - and you need that passion to help the community - not for me tho |
