4 calls from Swinton since 4pm last night. Just ended up swearing at "Ali" and telling him to "fuck off!"

So in desperation have signed up with TPS hoping to stop these nuisance calls. Anyone know if it works?

A few still slip through, but if they are persistant ones (PPI and all the crap) and it is on your mobile, it is worth getting an app and just adding it to blocked numbers. Some apps even have this feature rolled in anyway.

I have even registered proper complaints against some companies multiple times (to the relevant authorities) and still they call so I wouldn't bother wasting your time with that.

It has worked well for us.

Doesn't stop the overseas lot from phoning though.

When a phone call does get through I answer "hello Epping police station how can I help you" this seems to stop them for a few weeks.

Tell them to take you off their list if they call again.

TPS stops cold calls from UK based companies. You may still get some foreign ones.

If you do get a UK call take the details and complain. Action can be taken if they don't take TPS registered people off their lists and continue to call them.

It's worth registering, definitely.

I read of one guy in the paper a few weeks ago, who was so fed up with ppi and nuisance calls that he changed his number to a premium rate code

So whenever these company's called, he would make money from it. He made £300 in a year and the company's no longer call. However, that was some kind of loop hole he found so I don't think it's as easy as it sounds.

tried explaining my parents that registering with the tps means absolutely jack shit if thier numbers in the telephone directory, because it's them "presumed" that they approve of marketing calls. but,it's like talking to the wall, my dad don't understand the way laws and rules can be bent

Not true. Registering with the TPS opts out of marketing calls even if you are in the phone book.

The TPS compile a list of all opted out numbers and uk companies are legally obliged to check their database and remove all opted out numbers.

It covers UK companies only though.

It's good to know that most have found it helpful. Even better to know that at least one other Fabster has found the TPS as a result of this thread.

you must offer a service to use a premium number the bloke in question had a business so that was his get out clause

Ask him how big his cock is and they will put you on the not to ring list as they don't want female telesales operatives being put in an uncomfortable position.

There was a guy on the Today programme who charged a cold calling company a minute rate, very high one, and beat them in small claims court. He recorded their calls. It is worth going for them thtough tps or tell them you are charging them a rate of £10 per minute and see what happens.

It does actually work its to do with liability and knowingly letting staff knowingly wring a flagged number. You have to be vague with your terminology though so cock (could be poultry) to make sure the bill aren't involved but they want to make money not have staff complaining to management or suing them for making them call a previously flagged number.

I used to do cold calling for a certain double glazing company, sometimes people would tell me they were on the TPS and to remove their number from the database. Our database was a pile of phone books which we would randomly choose a page out of. Always felt bad that I couldn't do anything to stop them being called again though chances were slim they would get another call.

If it doesn't work you can make complaints to the ombudsman or something to say they aremaking nuisance calls to them after rreasonable requests to take you off their database.

Take names and Times of calls. They are legally required to give you a first name but not a first name.

There is no point getting shitty. They won't care. You will just become a talking point on their breaks. As annoying as it is its not the frontline people who are responsible.

I only plug in my landline when i need to phone an 0845 number. As i know people can contact me on my mobile, same with work.

These call centres alot of the time are in another country so they don't have to follow the law.

As when i used to have my phone line on 24/7 every call wanted to try and get money from you and i hate reading stories where some OAP's trust and have faith in people, when it's all BS.

I wouldn't used any site which can save you money on car insurance etc. As they take that information and as you ticked the terms and conditions they can freely sell it to anyone.

I know Barclays and a few other banks sell personal information to 3rd parties. But the worst group for selling data is any social media website and Goggle, as they log all information and try to steal ur wifi password, if they car is doing snaps.

Even if you don't used the google browser odds are you'd still be logged. As nearly all websites are part of the goggle marketplace, which they used to get data and make money from adverts.

I'm stopping now, I've typed that in my words as tech guys, send stuff out, mainly telling us not to install anything onto a work computer, it's like they are trying to make us work, the cheek!

Yes it does. Won't stop everything but really does reduce it. I only tend to get cold called by companies I already have business with.

I also use the Mail Preference Service. That really cuts down the junk mail but won't stop the takeaway flyers.

At some point in the dim and distant past you may have made an enquiry, or bought a policy from Swinton. They will then contact you on/around the renewal of that policy until the end of time (because they know you have insurance due around then). They will do the same if you cancel a policy as you've gone elswhwere and so have a new renewal date. The same applies for online comparrison sites - once you do a quote then the top three companies offering quotations are sent all the details you entered, plus contact details to try and seel to you directly, because they know they are one of the three cheapest prices you saw. The opt out of communication tick box applies to thw website - not the companies quoting on it. Do you actually answer the calls from Swinton or see its them ringing again and just ignore it? The dialler systems they use as a rule will call a number every 4 hours maximum (so three times a day - morning lunch evening) until they make contact - ie you answer...and will keep calling until they make contact. Never put your real number on the sites, they'll nag the fuck out of you. And once you say no they "should" stop calling - until the following year.

Its a long winded and anal explanation I know but...

Dont mind junk mail, I can bin that as and when I please and when it gets up my nose a quick google search will get the name of the chairman of the offenders board, then another search will get an address where I can return the mail to (to pay post).
