I got a letter today telling me that my income for 2012-2013 was 5 grand more than I reported. The reason for the cock-up is I worked from Mar-Jun 2012, and then out of work till January 2013. When I finished work in the June (never got a P60 from them) I told HMRC I had earned 5 grand in that job in order to keep my details up to date (as they request). When I started my new job in January, I told them how much I would earn Jan-Mar 2013 in this position. Keeping them updated as they requested. They have sent me a letter telling me that they only had details (from me)of my pay from the latter job, but they know that I got 5grand in the previous job. So they have written me a letter suggesting that I withheld information from them! I have always been upfront with them, but they have ignored my previous pay when I told them about my new job. So if they claim that I withheld info, how come they know about it and they based my initial tax credits in the first half of the year on it? |

It sound harsh as you are actually going out to work rather than sit at home and not bother. The tax credit system is notorious for getting people in the shit sadly. |

I beat these stupid twats that are trying to work an unworkable system. They claimed they'd overpaid me for 12 months.
After 5 or 6 years of threats to take me to court I chanced on a website that told me that if you told them of a change in circumstances they MUST BY LAW alter your credit payout. They failed to do it. If you can prove that you made the call and they will have record of it, even if it's just a log of the call you can cite that and they will be forced to drop the case.
They even refunded the money I'd tried to pay back to them on the drip as they realised their case was unwinnable.
The problem is that the staff haven't a clue what is going on. HMRC and the tax credit people do not talk to each other. It's just a bureaucratic load of twaddle with Peter Robbing Peter to pay Paul. |

Bunch of complete tossers
The whole tax credit system is a complete farce
How they're unable to work out how much I've earned over a year, given that it's on my P60, is beyond belief !
Had so much grief with them with my first child that we never even bothered with my second |

Oh that is interesting. I wasn't aware of that I've had I don't know how many lengthy phone calls with them each year and they still get it wrong. Thankfully my mobile bill is itemised. |

Tax credits are twat's! I used to get 40 a month then was put on a 4 day week at work informed them and sent them details of earnings they put it up to 100 a month in the January. In July I was waiting for the money to go in which never happened so I phoned them and was told my payments had been stopped! A while later I got letter saying they over paid and I owed them 300 I argued it but they just adjusted my tax code to get it back |

A complete fucking shambles by the fucking shambles by the people who brought them in.
Designed to lure the majority into inaccurate, often fraudulent submissions/claims.
Other laws passed that prevent "Govt" departments sharing mandatory information to resolve issues.

Well I can only speak of my own experience but it was like a Eureka moment when I realised I had them by the balls. My particular case was an obvious change from self employment to PAYE. There was one phone call logged in may 2006 the day after I went PAYE. Although there was no transcript they couldn't deny I'd made the call.
They have an obligation to record calls by the way, but seldom do it by the looks of it, but must log the date and time so if your phone bill and their log match up I think you might have them by the balls too. |

How can it be right to have a system that taxes people with one hand, which is fairly easy to do, it's called PAYE and then hand it out willy nilly and without proper checks.
It's led to an army of workers in a government department which is overwhelmed by Bureaucracy and waste.
Thankfully I have not had to deal with this bunch of idiots of late but it sounds like they haven't learnt any lessons whatsoever about how to sort out peoples claims correctly. It just seems to swing from overpayment to underpayment. |

Don't even get me started with tax credits.. or child benefit as its the same number roughtly to call.
I needed to report some changes... Several calls at over 30mins on hold... Not free call either.. to get the message... " sorry there is no one available to try your call.... Please try again later. Goodbye" and it hangs up.
So frustrating and I've just had a letter saying they want letters from my kids school to check that they are in education from 2011 till now....
The law now requires them to be in school till they are 18 .... Bloody stupid x |

The Tax Credits system is Childs play compared to housing benefit! In my lifetime I've had to claim it three times (not by choice) and three times I've ended up paying it all back. The fourth time my landlord tells me I have to claim it they will be getting a resounding NO. The hoops you have to go through I just can't understand how people manage to claim it fraudulently |

It's almost a carbon copy of what happened to me. I still struggle to comprehend why they caved in. I think it was asking for my phone call log and embedded somewhere in their charter is a clause that states if a customer lets them know about a change they must act within 30 days. They try to hide behind their other rules and bureaucracy. Just like PPI they eventually got found out. Trouble is they are a government agency and have the vast resources of the government to try and wear you down to compliance. |
