Is it just me, but when I read the word social as in the context of 'Kent social'..'met at a social' I imagine a community centre, urns of tea, sandwiches, fairy cakes, served through a hatch, followed by a game of bingo, and a prize draw.
Now, of course I assume that is far from the actuality of socials, and judging by the comments on Fab people seem to really enjoy the experience.
Shallow, I know, but I find the name really off putting, surely it's not beyond the wit of forumites to come up with a wittier, sharper, term that reflects what, is after all, a group of people with a highly unusual common interest..lol |

"I love the tea and cake
I never got any tea at the Kent social "
Obi made me a coffee in the morning... Does that count? did you not have one at breakfast club?
OP I think social sums it up perfectly for me, it was an event put on for people to meet each other with no pressure to play. Having met some of the forumites in this way they are now on my 'to do' list. Lol. The same way I would ask for a social meet even if it were a one on one situation which could well be tea and cake as I do love a latte and a muffin in costa xA lot of socials aren't even at clubs, some are pubs etc so wouldn't involve any play at all unless people chose to take it elsewhere. I think if you gave it a more 'sexual' name it might put off some nervous newbies. |

I have been to many socials all over the country and they are just that. Socials.
Although very different from how you describe them lol.
They are usually held in a club, pub, working mens club etc. There is a d.j. sometimes strippers, lots of revelry and it's a good chance to meet lots of like minded people all in one setting.
Many people book into local hotels and some host small parties or invite one or two people back. The hotels are where the real fun starts.
Of course your not expected to join in and many go just to enjoy a night out with people with similar interest.
I have enjoyed all the socials I have been to some more than others.
Try it you may like it x |

Wasn't referring to an individual meet socially, just organised ones.
Doesn't have to be 'sexual' just more relevant to how groups meet in the 21st century |

See, I'm going to the Sheffield Social. Its in a regular vanilla venue so it really is just that. What happened afterward when everyone retired to their hotels, or even in the toilets at half-time isn't something I'm going to worry about.
I'm going for the social aspects, to meet people.
Sometimes, if the soicals are in swinging clubs, this may lead to more meet & play than at socials in vanilla venues. But thats all good too, because you know in advance that the environment may affect the overall social activities which occur.
The main thing is that you go knowing why you're attending and you'll probably find there are many others there of the same mindset - and as long as its not an orgy in the social areas, its all cool. |

"The sheffield pub social will have cake and a prize draw! I believe the venue does offer an afternoon tea option as well.
And OMG have we got a great prize for the raffle! We got a donation from LoveHoney and being a curious soul I peeped - and I wish I hadn't cos they've been ever so generous and as the organiser I can't really enter. "
Ill enter and if I win it, you can have it with pleasure.
I have an over-abundance of paraphernalia as it is and no-one to use them on/with. |

We have Scones, in Cork
On topic - social is the perfect name for these events - unless you associate the word with 'Social Security' in the UK or 'Social Welfare' in Ireland - which could put you off your cuppa sometimes lol |

Help. See im confused now. I always thought socials (not that I have gone to any or will do), were as the poster described. Ok now. Ive had one to one socials, which were just coffee.
So is there coffee and/or cake/pie and then people disappear off to hotel or wherever for fun/sex etc?
Im so out of the loop I think

Some are organised at clubs like the Kent one at Eureka's. ...
The Sheffield one is in a city pub, so no shenanigans in there .... But what you do afterwards |

"I don't really get it OP? What would you call them?"
Well if nothing else the thread has allowed many forumites to relive their social escapades!
Just get the feeling, I might be wrong though, there is a certain amount of defensiveness in many posts.
It's not socials themselves, I'm sure they are great fun, and allow people to meet other fab members in a relaxed environment..it's the name I find twee and boring.
You might not agree, but can't see what you don't get.
As for what would I call them, probably go with something that identifies with the area concerned, I'm sure the Manchester, Edinburgh, Kent, fabsters could come up with something.

I get your point about 'social' sounding a little dull - but at the end of the day it's a label that suits the events!
I, for one, was no more than social with any other fab member in kent, with the exception of my 'date' for the night.
If the cap fits....... |

I went to the Peterboro social which someone kindly arranged n hostessed. It was my first social so was rather apprehensive what to expect n I was probably the oldest there (poor old sod lol)
Anyway I needn't have worried it was just chats n d*unky poos in a pub bar. All very 'naice'. A few people where a bit cliquey but ya get that at any group gathering. They were MUCH more cliquey at my ME meeting Saturday!!
I met plenty of nice peeps including some regular forumites n some new playmates.
As for a more suitable name how about er............nope I can't come up wiv anything |

"What about something super exciting like:
"The FAB Swingers Meet and Greet!"
I think 'that bunch of reprobates' is more honest myself."
Dictionary definition of "Reprobate":
rep·ro·bate (rpr-bt)
n.
1. A morally unprincipled person.
2. One who is predestined to damnation.
adj.
1. Morally unprincipled; shameless.
2. Rejected by God and without hope of salvation.

I've been to a few at vanilla venues and I can't think of another suitable name either. I think once you've been to one, the word 'social' can only conjure up images of drinking, dancing, people dressed to impress and generally a damn good night
I've also hosted a couple of smaller shindigs at my house which I called 'Antisocials'. These did involve cakes, pass the parcel, and quite a lot of booze |

Well I for one wouldn't regard a 'social' as a codename for an orgy I fully understand the function of a ' social'.. it's the name..outdated, conservative,

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
How about soiree? Even more old-fashioned so it should be ripe for a revival.
It would separate it from one to one social meets but the gang social would have to be in the evening to be a soiree.
