The situation...
(It's long. Give up now or bear with me  )

Oh I think u may b a bit off beam there. It's quite common I think for men to be soft/hard/soft/hard during play as the levels of excitement rise n fall . Sexual play isn't usually maintained all at one level on the graph
In my experience, when males are in early 20s (ish) they often stay erect the entire time which possibly is due just to the fact they are actually HAVING sex. Over time most men will find there erections fluctuate during a session (there will no doubt b exceptions who'll now say they always stay fully erect so I've added that to save a litany of posts stating they do - I'm kind like that! ). The following is going to be a wide sweeping statement that I'll probably be shot down for posting but hey ho.

I've met men who have been hard before there has been any physical contact but I have also met men who take a little while to get hard.

As said, over analysing it.
Rash generalization, men can't multi task, I have to be thinking about sex to stay hard, if a stray thought about, say "how am I going to pay the gas bill" takes my mind off target it'll start to go soft. I'd put it down to lack of focus/mood/outside worries.
May be the stray thought "Will my wife find out - will she chop my bollocks off?" That'd do it.
