Bigger stuff has always been a sign of wealth in the US. It's to do with their supposedly classless society.

Whilst it's a bit of a sweeping generalisation, it's fairly accurate re the ones we get over here.

A survey a few years back suggested only about a third of Americans have a passport.

Unfortunately, it's the loudest, brashest most unpleasant third.

Having worked other there for a while there are some real loud brash ones who don't have passports. Unpleasant? Well no more unpleasant than we get in the UK and the rest of Europe and thinking back some of the brash Americans can also be very friendly and welcoming which can be more than said for parts of the UK.

I agree with what my father used to say. The British and the Germans have far more in common than most of us would like to admit to. Brits can be arrogant and overbearing when abroad, we are also very patriotic ( although few admit this). We expect everyone to speak English. Germans think they are superior. We know we are....lol ( last bit was one of dads jokes by the way).

The Germans I have met, have all been fairly agreeable.

That said the Americans do have big cars and big food. The benefit of a low population is such a big country.

Having spent time in Texas and knowing quite a few Americans, I think their huge state size, and rivalry between states has a part to play, not to mention that it has been somewhat separate too. It's a fairly right wing state, apart from little pockets, such as Austin, and this influences things too.

Generally Texans will make you very welcome, and are very polite, as others point out.

In general, in the US, adults are referred to as 'Ma'am or Sir, which is respectful, and children do have some of what has been lost here. People are also reluctant to criticise others in public, as it's seen as disrespectful (wouldn't last long on fab...).

Texans are not as a whole a bad people. Sure the bad news gets in the news, but how often does good news hit the front pages so to speak?

Americans, not just Texans, dont always like things bigger, but because of the culture of being a land of freedon and all things plentiful, bigger has to be bigger than you can get anywhere else.

Doesn't mean it's cheaper, but to someone with the right mind, if a little can go a long way, a lot can go longer

That's not my experience of how the American public treats Vietnam vets, or any vets for that matter.

Vietnam vets have been and still are badly treated by a series of US governments but not by the public.

There's hardly a family in the US which hasn't suffered a lost or maimed son or daughter Vietnam. It's one of the things which turned many against their government.
