Apparently it's iphone users who now have to pay the subscription fees to bring them inline with the other phone types, who already have the year fee. But if you already have it in iPhone (from before the change) it should remain free for life. So says their FAQ |

Android user here. WhatsApp is only free for the first year. However, the extended my service every time I didn't pay, and that lasted 6 months. Then I changed my number so got a new free year. |

Mine went off. I got the messages for a few weeks but thought it was a wind up. Anyway, off it went. So I paid the 69p and it was back on within a few hours. Well worth it too if you send a lot of photo's or short video's. Can also send voice messages.
I think there's the option to pay for one or two years service. Pay for too and it works out a little cheaper. |

There have been spam warnings about whatsapp introducing charges. Lots of different spam messages have been sent over the last couple of years warning of charges and other stuff like that. It's worth searching on the web for info.
That doesn't mean that apple et al won't charge to download stuff - I don't use their equipment, I just use whatsapp from a different phone. |

The spam messages come thru as a message like any other message would. The expiry message comes up in a white box when you open the app, that is the genuine one. |
