I saw a good comment from Yasser Arafat years ago about the troubles in the Middle East .
It went along the lines of " people fighting over their imaginary friends" |

"You will find hitler was religious.I knew someone would invoke godwins law.well done Hitler was religious?! Where did you get that information from?"
In Mein Kampf, he wrote that he believed in "The Christian God", although he was not overtly religious. |

I must have missed the memo from God that states people of different religious beliefs should kill one another in his name……. |

I'm a little confused. How has this thread become a discussion about hitler? Please excuse me, I'm a bit thick. |

It's probably tucked away amongst the 'smoting' and 'smiting' the old testament is so fond of. |

Due to the comment at the top of the thread that atheists haven't commited mass murder in the name of non-belief which led to debate about whether Hitler was religious... Whether Hitler was religious or not is beside the point. It didn't stop the churches in Nazi Germany being co-opted into the Reich Church under the control of Nazi ideology.
Better examples of (officially) atheist societies which committed mass murder would be Communist Russia under Lenin & Stalin in the 20s & 30s, and Cambodia under Pol Pot in the 70's.
Hope everyone's still awake! |

Killings in the names of gods have been going on since gods were invented. Then there's killings for power and territory - hence the world wars. Political beliefs have probably killed as many in history as religious ones. |

Their perverted logic goes that, if you kill in the name of whatever deity you think you believe in, you'll find a place in that deity's version of heaven.
It's all bollox but it provides comfort for the nutters. |

On the other hand, they did kill a lot of people, due to their religious beliefs.
Even atheist use religion,to justify killing.
It's a strange old world.

Can you show links to show any killings were in the name of atheism? |

Encyclopedia of wars reckons that of 1,763 major conflicts in recorded history, only 123 of them were classified as having been fought over religious differences. That’s just under 7 percent. The encyclopedia also explains that the number of people killed in these 'religious' conflicts amounts to only 2 percent of all those killed in all conflicts.
Most, and a say again most, wars, historically, are political in origin whereby some power hungry loony wants to extend their reach, their borders, take over a neighbours resources, or wants to stay in, or to gain power...and so it goes on.
War is not a good way to go about things....and killing, for whatever reason should not be condoned.....but please, whatever your beliefs or unbelief's, don't go blaming it on the religious wallers every time. Thank you for letting me get that off my chest |

Atheists don't believe in Gods per se, but it would be difficult not to see both Marxism and Fascism as secular religions, like theism they are authoritarian and messianic, practice systems of indoctrination, absolute codes of conduct, designated enemies, and unquestioning devotion to a higher authority.
History tells us that millions lost their lives in the name of Marxism and Fascism. |

Be interesting to know just how many of these neighbours 'just happened' to be of a different faith. |

"Try checking out the rise and fall of the "Third Reich"
Pretty sure that wasnt in the name of "GOD"" Think that if you do a little thinking you will realize that the Nazi party used religious hatred to secure power, and that is exactly what those manipulating Islam are doing.
There is no difference between the Nazi's and violent Islamic fundamentalism. Nor is there any real difference between the UN's reaction today to the growth of extremism and the League of Nations reaction in the 30's.
Of course this is purely my opinion for what its worth. |

Meanwhile, closer to home, the fact that two schools - a non-denominational school and a neighbouring Catholic primary are no longer separated by a six and a half feet wire security fence running the length of the playground is a major story in Scotland's main broadsheet newspaper.
Yes, it's 2013 and two schools need separated by a security fence on the grounds of religion. |
