Which comedians to people think are overrated?

There are two that jump straight to the front of my mind:

Peter Kaye and Billy Connolly.

Both were pretty funny to begin with, but now they just seem to have lost their edge and seem to me to be living on their reputations. Either could go on stage and read out their shopping lists and people would laugh just because these guys have big reputations and so it must be funny.

Bit harsh considering the big yin has just announced he's in the process of fighting one terrible illness only to face another. In his prime he was the very best. I don't actually think he does much stand up now anyway.

im not so sure about them not being funny anymore i think that what happens with comedians it that there is an over saturation of them in a short space of time with all the chat shows etc and we get sick of their patter.

so with that said i think people like Frank Skinner

David Baddiel

Dave Gorman

should all be done under the trade descriptions act.

Ricky Gervais. I think he's awful and not funny at all.

I can't agree about Peter Kaye being over-rated. I saw him last year at the O2 and he was hilarious.

For me peter Kaye is the funniest man ever, some are just born funny. As for overrated about 90% of the others, I don't understand most of them anyway

Non are overrated, our tastes change, comedians tend not to change, they fins a formula that works, people like and it pays the bills, so why change, audiences change.

So to answer your question, no I don't think there are any comedians overated.

One of the funniest men on the planet is Ken Dodd.

I don't think he has changed his act or jokes for 50 years, but he still fills theatres across the country, and has the audience eating out of his hand.

Billy Connolly is a comedy god!

Ricky gervaise and Miranda hart have never been funny, only awkward

Andy Burnham is hilarious only I don't think he is supposed to be

went to see the big yin few years in glasgow my home city and was disappointed. On stage exactly an hour kept clock watching as if he wanted to go. Turns out it was something like his 17th night there in a row. Saw him in Manchester maybe two years ago he was top form mm stage over the hours and mix of old and new material better still if looked to be genuinely having fun . Best comedian status was sealed

Totally agree about Kenneth Arthur Dodd, seen him four times and left with my ribs aching with laughing so much. Last time was at Malvern, started the show at 5.30, we didn't get home 8 miles away till well gone midnight! There were folks from Milton Keynes and Aberystwith there as well!! Ken is the last funny man still standing!

Saw Jo Brand in the Cresset a few years back, she wasn't funny

Russell however, I changed my mind after listening to him on Desert Island Disks, eloquent and intelligent and to me funny

I thnk humour has changed over the years. Old style like Morecambeand wise and the two ronnies have been replaced.

Of the modern ones I think Mrs Brown is hilarious but ricky gervais, whilst I can appreciate his talent probably coukdnt make me laugh if his life depended on it

russlell brand and ricky gervais are not comedians full stop!....i change channel on tv as soon as either of these two appear on my screen.

bob monkhouse and ken dodd used to put on 2 hour shows and the audiences still wanted more!...just pick a subject for bob monkhouse and he would rattle away with jokes on that subject...most comics are hard pushed these days to hold an audiemce for 3 minutes.

mrs brown is great, but his stand up is shockingly bad.

infact, its bordering on awful!!

missus has the box set, bought for xmas by her son, that was a waste of a few hours. she LOVES all irish comedians, but even she found it boring

Billy Connelly was very funny in the 70's , 80's.

Come the 90's and his TV comedy shows were unwatchable. Did he really need to be adding "fucking" as every second or third word in his stories?

Ken Dodd and Mike Harding were two comedians, multitalented too, who put on tremendous live shows.

I'll second that. I saw him live in the late 70's. It was a works night out with my ex Mrs and to be honest I didn't want to go. I was so used to seeing the TV version of him I fully expected to sit there bored shitless. How wrong I was. He was as sharp as a razor, had the whole house roaring with laughter and didn't have to swear once.

His show was brilliant especially for the kids and he came and signed autographs for them, very good for family entertainment

I've generally always found American humour funnier, with a few exceptions. Frankie Boyle used to be side splittingly funny, not so much now.

Omid Djalili however, is brilliant!!

Jasper carrot once said that there are only so many jokes that work, once you have done a TV show that's 2 years worth of material that can never be used again.

Add the censorship restrictions of tv and you are left with the only way to see a comedian is live, and not too frequently.
