Blood and Platelet donation

Jump to: Newest in thread

London

I was just wondering how many people donate their blood or platelets .

I have been a donor for a number of years and it gives me a great sense of pleasure knowing I can help others who need donations to help them with their health issues.

It be great if more people would donate I do appreciate that some people can not donate for health reasons but many more come up with I don't like the sight of blood or I don't like needles.

If everyone just donated once a year it would help tremendously.

I think you can as I have seen quite a few donors with tattoos but I will find out how long after and get back to you

You have to wait a year I think as I looked at doing it after I had a tattoo done.

Yep, it's 12 months after a tattoo.

We both give blood, I'm on 25 and Mrs JFL is up somewhere near 80 now.

I used to prefer it when you just turned up and queued though, the appointment system just doesn't work or us.

Been donating regularly since I was 18. Thinking of putting my name down on the bone marrow donation list but need to do a bit more research on it

You don't have to wait a year after a tattoo or at least Leslie didn't after a few of hers not sure if it was 3 or 4 months I hate needles but we both still give blood as said befor it gives us a great feeling of pride knowing we could and possibly gave saved people's lives just by giving a drop of the red stuff

Keep it up.

Have you considered donating your platelets bit more difficult for women to do so due to their genetic make up but more men can.

Simply put, platelets are the clear, gluey stuff that stick scabs together !

You can donate them twice as frequently as blood (or inbetween blood donations) but you usually have to go to a regional centre to do it.

To be honest, the only thing that would put me off is the needles and the sight of my own blood.

Not a phobia as such, just not a situation I'd easily acclimatise to.

I'm actually having to lie down now after discussing it! It's awful because my mum had to have a transfusion years ago or she prob would of died so I fully appreciate those that do.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Thank you to all of you that donate. I was only able to donate once, and a tiny amount at that, before being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and blood disorder.

If you've never had a transfusion I can't tell you how utterly fit and marvellous it feels to have good blood in your system when you're used to weak, sticky blood. I felt as though I could tackle anything I had so much energy.

Thank you.

well done Karen its a lovely thing that you have been doing for 15 years.

Its harder for women to donate platelets something about their genetic makeup. I think the rules have changed now and you can donate every 12 weeks.

Keep it up.. x

Yes the are the white blood cells.

it takes about 90 minutes to do so. .

Used as a clotting agent .

very often used by cancer patients.

You cannot donate platelets in between blood donations this is not allowed...

You have done your part in helping others... There are many people that have been helped by your donations

There comes a time for some reason or other we all cannot donate.. Hopefully your children will .

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I began donating at 18 and used to donate as often as possible.

However, I found that the clinics got less and less reliable and even with an appointment it would sometimes take 2 hours to donate. At the same time I increasing felt like I was in the way, rather than a valued donor.

On my penultimate visit the room was so crowded that there was nowhere to sit to wait. I did my best to find somewhere to stand, out of the way of everyone trying to move around, only to be jostled and bumped aside by staff, told to move out of the way and then given a right dressing down by one of the staff for standing too close to the cubicles where they went over the forms and did the blood test! On that occasion I'd had an appointment but ended up waiting 2 hours.

The final straw was my next visit. I won't go into details but the way I was treated was entirely unacceptable. I told them then that I was not happy and was re-evaluating continuing to donate. They more or less shrugged.

I haven't been to a donor session since. I'm all for it in principle but not if being a donor involves sitting around waiting for hours and being treated like something the staff trod in.

I have blood that is in high demand too. All the session invite letters went on about how vital my blood is and how much they need my donations.

Then at the sessions they treated me like I was more of a nuisance than anything else.

Sod them.

I was a donor but only managed to donate a handful of times before they made it so you can't donate if you'd had a transfusion. I donated bone marrow to my sister and had a transfusion after that.

So if anyone has any questions about bone marrow donation I might be able to answer but it was Hmmm almost 20 years ago and things have probably changed!

Gave blood 80-odd times. Wanna get to 100. I cannot donate platelets, as my veins are not strong enough. Best time was when they fetched me from work with an ambulance and collected the blood even before we arrived at the hospital. The siren was on!

Oh, and it is possible to donate every 3 months; you have to organise the next date via HQ. There's a trial run done somewhere in the UK. But I'm going to do the 4 times a year routine. Love the new seats, by the way. Much more comfy than the usual flatbeds.
