I am a believer that you look after these old gems - they are with you life- if you are lucky.
My mate went to Notts the other day to go to a dentis that she trusts - and that is a rarity. She travelled all the way from Cambridge to have her work done.
At a private dentist.
Her mouth - like so many of us of my time frame have loads of fillings and bad dental work - and her dentist has spent alot of time fixing that.
I am one of the lucky ones- despite having a brace - and in those days was teased the hell out of called Jwas and Metal Mouth etc BUT
Have not got one filling.
Have straight teethm and good teeth - not white like hollywood style - but good strong healthy teeth.
What horror stories - or GOOD stories do you have regards to teeth?????? |

Dentsist.....i hate dentists.....had a crown put in when I was 15 and the dentist that did it was a butcher.
Scarred me enough that I didn't set foot in a surgery for another 6 years, and has taken years for me to stop passing out when I walk through the door, then to be calm enough that I am not dripping with sweat through the nerves.
Like your friend I travel some distance to a dentist now, about 150 mile round trip, but have found one that I trust, that recognises my fear and keeps me calm.

I used to go to a NHS dentist. He was forever giving me fillings and it was getting costly. I thought he's taking the piss so i put my name down for the private dentist in the same practice.
In the past 4 years i have not had one problem. What he did say was NHS dentist are targeted for work done ie bonus payments if they "sell" dental work ie fillings, root treatment etc etc.
That's what he said and he knew what was going on. |

one dentist had me on antibiotics for 3 months for an abcess then removed the wrong tooth
i chnaged dentists and now actually fall asleep in the chair while waiting on them coming in to do any treatment |

I wouldn't say i love going but i would rather have my own teeth than some that go in a glass at night. Why do some people not go as rotten teeth is a huge put off? |

Before I changed to my current dentist, I went to a place that gave the appearance of being rundown or being run on a shoestring. Once, he started to descale my teeth and the drill broke down! I was never happy with the place and the final straw was when I sat down for some treatment and he started to extract a tooth without explaining what he was doing (English was very definately not this guy`s first language) The extraction was a huge struggle as the roots had fused to the next one and the tooth came out in several pieces. At one stage, he had me crying with pain because of the pressure he was putting on me. After a huge struggle, the tooth finally gave up it`s grip and I was sent on my way with a handfull of tissues to bite on to try and stem the bleeding which was filling my mouth up. I had to drive 15 miles home in this condition.
On reflection, he should have looked harder at the x-rays and given me the chance to have the tooth extracted under a general anesthetic at hospital, but I reckon he just wanted to earn the cash and not me to hospital where he would have lost out. Needless to say, I didn`t go back. |

Like most I had a bad experiene with a dentist a number of yrs ago now and dont go these days, I know i should..
But I do take my son regulary, he needs a scale and polish, and because he has special needs, they are gonna sedate him..
We went last week for a pre-appointment check thing and I felt phyiscally sick and that was just in the waiting room, god knows what I'm gonna be like next week when they do the work..
Think they might have to sedate me too, unless I just pass out first  |

This doesnt give me much faith.
I have no fillings, but have cracked my back tooth - on a bloody mustard seed, and i can feel the crack gettting bigger - and know that i will have to havea it seen to at some point soon.
Rreally dont wanna- but know i will have to.
Obviously private is the way to go, and maybe i should use same dentist as my mate then, at least i nkow she trusts him.
Its not easy is it - cos ya gotta trust what they tell you.

Private is not necessarily the way to go if you can get a good NH dentist. When I lived in Ludlow I could only get in with a private dentist, a woman, and she was useless. Moved away and had another woman and she was the worst I've ever seen, now with a Polish NHS guy and he is brilliant. It's just your luck sometimes but paying for it doesn't mean it's the best. |

I wish I could find and NHS dentist who hasn't got a full patient list! Every trip to mine is £80 - 40 for the clean and thorough polish etc and 40 for the dentist to spend about 10 seconds havinga quick look! I go twice a year too! Z |
