I loved the time of Brass Eye when they made up a drug called cake, and got loads of famous people to look complete twats saying how dangerous it was.

The Panorama Spaghetti Harvest.

not old enough to have seen it when it was broadcast, but in the early 60's Panorama was a factual news program. They did an April fool special showing areas in Italy where fresh spaghetti is grown and harvested for worldwide consumption.

They rigged a whole vineyard and showed little italian women harvesting homegrown pasta.

narrated by David Dimbleby as well i think and was believed by millions of TV viewers.

or there is Orson welles 1930's broadcast of HG Wells War Of The World on US radio, so well done thathundreds of thousands of Americans panicked thinking the Martians had landed
