School parking....

Right now I'm sat in my car up the road from my daughters school. It amazes me how some of the parents think its absolutely fine to park right up on the footpath and on the school markings outside the gates!!

Would it really hurt then to park an extra 50 yards up the road where there is plenty if room?

I have seen several kids almost hit as they can't see over the cars to cross the road. And the council patrollers never seem to patrol. Oldham council now issue FPNs outside schools to those parking illegally. I think this is a great idea!

The joiner at the company I work for has kindly offered to make child size portable statues for the kids to the decorate and place along the the footpath. The sooner this is done the better!!

You think thats bad, you want to see the parking at my local senior school. The whole playground area is taken up with the teachers parked cars. Can they not walk a few hundred yards more?

Why the need to pick up kids in a car. Most schools have some sort of buds service. Leave the car at home. Our daughter travels over ten miles on train and buds then foot. She is fitter as a result and one less car on the road

The school have been reporting for a long time and nothing is ever done. I also feel for the residents that blocked in/out of their driveways.

I agree with you for the most part. I used to walk the children to school, but since changing jobs this is no longer practical as I start work at 9am and it is a 30min walk from the school.

I know people here that drive and don't work and they live just one or two streets away

The school have sort permission for these 'statues'. I'm well aware of the rules of the as I am a streetworks coordinator. The option of barriers was discussed, but viewed dangerous as this would then be causing a bottle neck for the children. The statues would not cause an obstruction to pedestrians as its a very wide footpath, but would cause difficulties to cars wanting to mount the footpath.

I still think the best option is to get patrollers down to issue FPNs as hitting the pocket is always a good deterrent!

I agree. Parking outside most schools by parents is dreadful. But saying that children should know how to cross the road safely. Unless they're on a crossing or the pavement its their fault for being in the road. But schools need better parking restrictions really

No I can't blame the children. When the car is taller than the the child how on earth are they meant to see if the road is clear. Imagine how you would feel if a child stepped out in front of you to check the road because they could not see over the cars? I certainly wouldn't blame the child, I'd place the blame with the owners of the cars that were illegally parked.

Genuine question.

What's a "streetworks coordinator" do?

It used to be a nightmare trying to get to work because of inconsiderate parents parking where ever they like. Even on the actual speed bumps ffs.

personally, there should be no parking anywhere near schools....for at least a mile in either direction

At my kids primary school they have the community support police officers come down a few days each week at the beginning of term. They give out a few tickets and it has improved things as the word gets out if you park badly you will get a ticket.

thers not that many about now

some areas dont have any local policing just national that covers that area an it can be a big area to cover

its a shame really but surly the schools can just wright 2 there parents warning them not 2 park on pavements as they can face a fine.. get 1 teacher to take a picture of them doing it

Lol, to much to write in one post!

Basically ensure that the company I work for abide by the Traffic Management Act and New Roads And Street Works Act. Manage, plan and coordinate the works with various local authorities. If they don't we are liable to hefty fines. Also deal with public queries regarding things like road closures.

It isn't really as boring as it sounds!

It not just kids that get effected, disabled and pushchair are effected too. It is a offence under the road traffic act.

there's looking out from behind a car and there's paying to attention and walking out into the road like an idiot. If children know how to cross a road safely then the odds of them getting hit by a car is greatly diminished. I don't want them to get hit by a car but I think blame where its due. If they're on the road where they shouldn't be and running out from behind parked cars its their fault. I would happily live with crossings every 200yards apart to make crossing safer and speed limits of 15 around schools. I also thought about park and ride for school kids. There's loads of ways to make it safer. And I have to say the easiest would be make patents park away from school.
