What things have people been awaiting when a company has provisionally named a release date only for it to be put back and back and back?

Examples ps4, a new car, new phone, etc

I haven't bought into marketing and being sold something I have no need for so this has never and will never affect me,

It is just another clever way of creating demand by hype,
