Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
An American blogger asked 1,000 people to name a UK city other than London.
Wales came in 6th place on the answers.
Can we say where places are in the UK? I had a friend who thought Cannock Chase was in Scotland.
Name a place, the next person says where it is and names another. |

thats what makes me laugh.
why would most americans know where places in the UK are?
not like we are near neighbours or anything.
sure, ask them about canada or mexico, dependant on which part of the US they live, and im certain they could give much more affirmative answers. |

It would be better if you did the phonetic spelling of the name.
We have an estate down in Peterbrough where the residents of the street can't pronounce it properly
Belvoir
It's beaver NOT bell,vyoire |

Wait until you get local pronunciations as well
Two good examples here close to us.
The first is what people outside the area call it, the others what locals or the older age group call it.
fengate... Bungit
Cowbit.. Kubit |

"American knowledge of UK is probably about as good as our knowledge of the USA."
Indeed it is! Unless you're some kind of Geography buff, you'd never know the names of any but the most popular/toursisty type cities. I myself could only name a handful of towns in the UK, but would be shit to tell you the exact location of that town. |

The one I was made to look a plonker over was about 20 years ago in Edinburgh. The guy at the airport told me I needed a bus to 'Kerrr-staw-fin'.
I let about five buses go past before I got on one, asked the driver and he looked at me like I was a dim-witted Sassenach, pointed to the name board showing 'Corstorphine' and said.. 'there ya gooo! Kerrrr-staw-fin!'. One felt a bit of a twat....

Seriously, how many Chileans, Bolivians, Guatamalens and loads others would know much about the UK?
Any of you think an Innuit in pursuit of a juicy seal is gonna know where Wetwang is? |

Bridgwater - Somerset |
FYI - Taunton is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts.
Met an American on a Greyhound Bus in Texas. His ambition was to visit England, he wanted to work his way from coast to coast. I had to explain that if he was just north of Wales and we were talking East and West coasts he could do it in an afternoon.
Often it's their sense of scale that confuses them. |

The thread really wasn't written to be about whether American's know any cities in the UK other than London. It was a hook/a device to play a game seeing if UK residents know places in the UK.

Dunno but I am going to guess Wiltshire.
Being a complete pedant, I just want to point out the blogger who set the questionnaire is actually British and lives in Manchester, England.
Right, back to the quiz
