Having a bit of a rant. Regarding the above. I begrudge having to pay £7 a day to park for work !!! That's £140 a month or looks even worse when after my Annual leave and bank holidays that around £1600 a year. How much do I have to earn before tax just to pay for parking ??? Right rant over and breathe !!!

That's certainly a lot of money, particularly on top of the everyday running costs of a car nowadays.

Whilst I'm not suggesting you should, or that it's even practical, have you any idea what using public transport would cost?

Probably no chance of it happening but is it worth asking your bosses for help with it, they can only say no ?

Public transport wouldn't work. Part of my work involves me visiting clients too. So at least I get mileage allowance for that.

OK, but setting that aside in your particular case, if you didn't have to use your car officially during the day, what would it cost to commute by public transport?

I thought you could claim back the car park receipts? or at least the vat from them. Is there no streets or anywhere near by you can park the car? it may involve walking for 10 minutes but to save £1600 a year it would be worth it

Will work not assist with the charges, given that you have to use your car for business use?

if your employer wont help with the costs, I d keep your receipts if you can show that its solely, exclusively and necessary you should be able to claim against tax, speak to the tax office they should be able to help,

I does seem a bit strange that an employer can oblige you to make your car available for 'official' use by you, even if recompensed by a mileage allowance, then expect you to cover the cost of having that vehicle easily accessible to you (ie, not parked 5 miles away) at YOUR expense.

Quiz your employers and/ or your union, if you're in one.

If the office is your place of work the you can't claim the car parking back as a legitimate expense.

Owever if your office is designed your home then ou can, however you can only do this for 24 months at the same office location

I think that's what I was saying, just trying to unravel the double negatives

I have a ompany car and I can't claim going to work, same as somebody with a private car.

If I was going to another office then I can claim however I can't claim if I was working on the second office for longer than 24 months

I might be wrong but I think if you're visiting another office or a client's office, you can only claim the mileage to that destination MINUS the mileage to your own office.

The fictional trip to the original office disappeared a few years ago, however some companies still try and put it in. You can claim the difference on your tax return and not expenses

That only applies if your not an MP.

Then you can claim first class rail travel to work, when ever you decide you can be bothered to go down there.

1. You don't have to be lazy, it's your choice to be lazy

2. You don't have to wear heels to walk from your car to work, you could change into them when you get to the office

3. You need to take heavy paper work and files home every night?

Maybe you are adding to your parking problems yourself when there are alternatives?

If that's a daily occurrence you either need to invest in a business file case on wheels or insist your employers pay for your parking.

Reading this with interest and a smirk. Suprising how many people havent answered 40's question and how many others got things wrong. My Dear 40nawty . If it cost £1600 per year and your a basic rate tax payer.i.e 20% and statndard non contracted out NI then the £1600 net would equate to £2352.95 gross . Gets worse if you a 40% or 45% tax payer. Travelling to and from a place of work is not tax deductable sorry everyone who thought it was. the person who had a company car and said 24 months travel allowance ... This comes under short term reloaction allowance and you have to have moved offices to be able to claime this and then you can only claim on the difference on the journey costs before the move and after the move and only for a 12 month period in Most cases. OMG i'm offering free advice here . Anyone want paye, ni advice £15 per hour now soz.

A lot of Hospitals charge for disabled parking. Some let you park for free if your parked in a disable parking space only.

Parking at Wythenshaw hospital is around £4 even for disabled, similar price at Salford as well.

There`s at least one car park in Plymouth that charges Blue Badge holders. Can`t say about the rest though and thinking about it I think this particular one may have been privately run whereas the Council ones MIGHT be free. One thing I do know id the Council ones charge on Sundays Had to bale from my hotel bed to feed the meter just so I could have breakfast before I left, which turned out to be vile!

All council car parks in Tameside now charge blue badge holders. There was uproar about it for months before it was implemented. I could be wrong but think they may get one hour free. It's still not good enough in my opinion.
