Female circumcision

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Firstly let me start off by saying I am deeply sorry if this offends anyone, i know this is a bit of s taboo topic but I am simply posting out of curiosity and lack of knowledge so if this has no meaning to you then kindly move on

So I was reading in the paper earlier about a guy who went around to some muslim woman's house, fucked her and agreed to circumcise her.

Now it was classed as a crime under the act of genital mutilation. So I was wondering is this so for all faiths? Or just the Muslim faith? And what exactly does it entail? Are there any ladies on here who know about it or have even had it done?

I know a lot of you may say just google it but I'm a bit dubious about doing so.

Also apologies for my naivety x

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

We have discussed Female Genital Mutilation on the forum before.

It's very unusual for this to be done to adult women and by a man.

I didn't see the news report so I won't comment any further yet.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Its an procedure that is used to prevent women from enjoying sex. It entails cutting off part of the female sexual organs, and is completely pointless.

It's not that simple and is a huge subject. Google it, or Youtube has lots on FGM as well

And by pointless I mean it has no benefit whatsoever for the women who have it done to them. Its incredibly painful for them though.

It's not just the clitoris. In many cases it's the removal of the clitoris, the hood and sometimes inner and/or external labia. Usually without anaesthesia. I have heard or razors and scissors being used.

It's done to "protect purity". Leaving a small hole for urine and menstrual blood. The cut is then later re-opened for sex and childbirth. One way or another.

The correct term is Female Genital Mutilation, which describes perfectly what it is.

I see no reason why the OP wouldn't read up on it himself;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_genital_mutilation

It's far better to get proper information than get some half-baked notions.

It's a disgusting, barbaric, demeaning, misogynistic, utterly unnecessary, unsupported by the Koran, illegal, act.

I don't think it is faith based but I would suggest as other poster have said, google is the place to go for this barbaric practice and information related to it.

I was worried I was looking up something dodgy to be honest, but I googled it and read the wiki page.

And yes I agree it's absolutely disgusting that someone would do this to these poor girls, it's inhumane x

It has nothing to do with religion - it is a cultural practice which pre-dates Islam. In fact, Mohammed was against it though he agreed to a minimal form of it - probably because he knew it would be hard to eradicate.

I spent some time looking into it not long ago. Absolutely horrendous. Pictures of school classrooms turned into makeshift operating tables during the holidays with girls being held down on the tables. Razors, knives, scissors. Sometimes 'nurses' who perform FGM are brought over here to perform it on a number of girls during her visit.

I just can't get my head around why anyone would think this is a good idea.

Some African cultures do this too. Think they also do it when they are about 13 or 14. It was in a episode of Casualty last year or somewhen. It's barbaric - why should the men be allowed to enjoy sex and not the girls?

No - it isn't. And even in the early 20th century in THIS country doctors were performing, on British women, what were known as cliterodectomies on those they deemed to be suffering from 'hysteria'.

The sad thing is that even Western doctors (yes also in the UK) perform the procedure because if they don't do it, it will be done by unskilled amateurs with unsterilized tools like pieces of glass. It's a crime that is widely known to be committed but very much under-reported.

No - this was nothing to do with any ethnic group apart from white British women. It began in the 19th century - and the last cliterodectomy was performed in early 20th (for this reason) - it was nothing to do with being of African or Asian heritage, or Islam. That was my point.

We all seemed to be agreed that what we are talking talking about is female genital mutilation. Furthermore there appears to be a general agreement that the process is barbaric.

I wish people would stop the euphemism of circumcision (cutting round) for a process that is actually excision (cutting out).

There are various different levels from snipping the clitoral hood to full infibulation. However, you are correct in that it should not be termed circumcision.

I agree 100 percent In Islam causing yourself pain or anyone else for that matter is not permissible in any way at all. The media and people who use islam for wrong doings have ruined the religion and the people who follow it.

Absolutely

This is interesting, because often we see others attitudes from our own perspective forgetting that their attitudes aren't based on our perspective but theirs. FGM is fundamentally wrong but then so is not vaccinating your children. Attitudes and superstition are ingrained in society no matter where they are and people looking from the outside need to remember that changing them is like shifting a mountain of custard, go to quick and nothing happens. Educate and information and allow people to move creates a far better long term result. Sadly the short term is often horrific.

I watched a program on it once, I don't understand it fully but from what I understand its total removal of the clitoris so the woman gets no pleasure from sex as she's just seen as being there's for mans pleasure and providing him with children

The report had an Imam stating that the clitoris causes a lot of itching and leaking from the area. It has to be removed to stop this itching and leaking.

The grandmother cutter stated it's to keep the girls pure, so it is done when they are five. The day before their wedding they return for a hole to be made to allow penetration.

You can make things illegal all you like but stopping its another matter. Parents just take their daughters back to their home countries although how someone who claimed asylum to get into the UK can just walk in and out in order to commit what is a crime in the UK defeats me.

The majority of cases are nothing to do with the UK though. As I said before more than 90% of Somali women have it done and actually WANT it done. These are centuries old cultural attitudes which are very difficult to change.

I don't think that's what this thread is really about. Thus far I have only posted factual comnents in general.

FGM is not a practice I would support ever. But having read a little about it I can see that in order to stop it one must first tackke the deep-seated cultural attitudes. Not all FGM women are the victims they are portrayed as. Often they ask for it or expect it. Yes there sre instances where very young children are mutilated against their will but how is that to be pokuced in some developing countries where there is little infrastructure and resources to do so?

I don't support FGM in any way but I do understand the cultural, custom and practice case that has been presented on this thread.

The "problem" is when a woman doesn't want to participate or subject her daughters to FGM. It is a crime here and social services and the police have failed cases here by being overly sensitive to the "cultural norm" argument.

In other parts of the world children are working to support their families from 5 and 6 years old. It's not legal here so we act.

The issue about FGM in this country needs to be tackled here.

It is illegal to put a child through FGM, or take them out of the country for that purpose, in the UK. Parents face prosecution regardless of what the social services approach is.

They should face prosecution but thus far haven't. One of the support groups I was working with have been spending their time reminding Social Services and Police of their duties through training on FGM.
