Someone (or something) is only worth what someone else will pay for it.

In the distorted world of football yes.Just like no film star is worth being paid millions for a film and the same goes for rock stars for album deals (Robbie Williams £80 mill plus for his record contract).

I think it's ridiculous. Go back to the days when football was a hobby and they all had 'real' jobs.

It's not a person it's an asset.

If you invested £85 million building a manufacturing plant you would expect a return via an increase in profits due to increased sales and a reduced cost base.

Buy buying Bale, they are expecting they will have a better position at maintaining or increasing their status in the champions league and as such a increase in TV revenue, gate revenue and championship league revenue.

That won't happen whilst there are still 'fans' out there who are more than happy to see their kids starve so they can attend away matches, have the latest replica top and pay the fines they incur for battering f*ck out of the opposition fans.

Let's not kid anyone. This is no more than voluntary taxation.

It's getting more obscene by the minute. That said the English fans don't seem to mind that average players are getting paid scandalous amounts so we can't judge foreign teams. The English league and particularly Sky have ruined football.

What they said..

Dont think Bales is worth it (now), perhaps if he can show he is able to produce a goal to games ratio of at least 1 goal for every 2 games (being a winger) - like Messi and Ronaldo with a near 1: 1 ratio.

Goals make points, which make profits!

It's ironic that Spain is in dire straits and out with a begging bowl to get bailed out and here is one business that can afford to remit £85 million for just one person.

The point I'm trying to make is we live in a funny old world. We demonise people on benefits yet happily fund a family with unimmaginable wealth.

Yes. The great people who tirelessly work on curing cancer, HIV, heart disease, malaria - these are the people worth 85 million. The doctors who give life to babies with heart defects. They are worth 85 million.

Some thug who can kick a football and make the tabloids because of their aberrant behavior. You could send them all to the firing squad and the world wouldn't be the poorer for it.

My second part was not aimed at anyone specific player - which wasn't possible as clear as it should be.

Tell you what, I retract it all, because I can't be arsed to argue the merits of the obscenity that is Premier Football. There you win. Carry on.

difference is that's 50 million people spend £10 a week on their pet and there are 40 million pets, giving joy and a sense of purpose to 50 million people, cheaper than alcohol or medication, pets are fantastic stress busters, and caring dogs are now being used in NHS to aid peoples recovery.

im not arguing it either.

the fans are the ones that are short changed every time, whilst the clubs carry on carrying on (my wn club is treating us like idiots saying we are overachieving and dont deserve to be where we are, wanker boards)

you specifically said a thug that can kick a ball isnt worth 85 mill, thats only 1 player then, as its a world record bid, so not every player, thug or not, has that price/value.

what value would be put on players in your mind?

they cant be worthless as they bring millions in revenue to the club, put bums on seats and provide entertainment to those that enjoy, and equally hate the sport, as they seem to spend as much time moaning about it as those that like it spend hyping it up lol

It seems churlish to become overly critical of other people right to make their own financial decisions based on what’s important to them……

It’s all proportionate.... after-all one person buying a cup of really expensive coffee as opposed to a cheaper option could easily be accused of being wasteful or extravagant unless we accept that person earned their own money so therefore has also earned the right to spend it as they please,,

What's with the comments about football fans paying silly money ?

Granted prices have increased and Granted its no longer a game for the working class male

Which I think is tragic

However putting things into perspective

People don't bat an eyelid when going to a concert

Or even a game of golf can be expensive these days

What about people spending £7 on a packet of fags ?

It's all relative to what you enjoy and how much you are willing to pay for that pleasure

last time i went to a game, i spent £60 on 2 tickets, for 1 1/2 hours of entertainment.

thats £20 per hour, each, times another 25k people.

a pack of fags can last you all day, or more, depending on your habit, so can be considered reasonable value

golf, depending how bad you are (personally, 3 hours for 9 holes @£15 a round) is reasonable value, and a nice walk.

so no, football in the upper areas of the league is NOT value for the fans at all.

even my local non league club costs more than a tenner for a game, although thats much much better

I imagine a lot of people benefit when a big-name , big-money transfer takes place…..

Surely it must stimulate a lot of activity in the wider economy providing jobs and job security for people whose livings are partly derived from the manufacture and prevision of goods and services fed by supporters of the clubs involved..

Ill tell ya

My earliest memories of going watching united were I got in free under my dads jacket

Then as a teen it was a few quid for the stretford end

My first season ticket was about £260

My last one was nearly £750

I paid £12 to watch united win the champions league and treble in 1999

I could have sold my match ticket for a grand that night

But memories from that night will stay with me forever

Tickets average around 50 these days

dont see how agents take MOST money from transfers.

the agent that made the bale move happen, or rather helped it, isnt going to get the lions share of that money.

one would suggest most money taken OUT of football is the players wages.

i very much doubt they plough their earnings back into the game, in any way shape or form.

more often cars, property, boob jobs and so on lol

My point is though, that it is an unnecessary loss of money. Brian Clough went to Roy MacFarland's house to persuade him to sign for Derby.

I see agents like he did, as nothing more than Ticket Touts.

i very much doubt they plough their earnings back into the game, in any way shape or form.

more often cars, property, boob jobs and so on lol"

Ah so basically are we saying all that money ends up back in the wider economy in the pockets of everyday folk who work manufacturing and supplying the goods and services these players spend the huge salaries on…

Coz that cant be such a bad thing, can it…?

soxy, the destination of the money isnt my argument, i have no problem with players being paid what clubs deem them to be worth.

my argument was with the comment agents take the most of the money from the game.

it is not by accident that areas around football clubs are quite affluent areas, so of course the money being spent in that way is a good thing

"The agents, who weren't needed a while back. Transfers were conducted between managers & chairmen "

I suppose it's only a matter of time before agents have agents.

Yes I agree independent agents are a parasitically breed that could easily be replaced by a set of structured official guidelines that take into account the financial demands of the modern game and the worth of it’s prize assets..

But I understand until such time as that happens (if indeed it ever does).

Players will need some form of independent representation when it comes to negotiating the terms and conditions of their contracts in a free market where their own life skills may not be best suited to finding the best deal for themselves…

How many football matches up and down the country and around the world in a year?

How many GPs?

What's that got to do with anything? Shows what good value my ticket is doesn't it?

Soxy, from this post and others, you seem to place a lot of faith in the economic multipler effect, yeah?

What about the multiplier effect of the downside? In simple terms, people living beyond their means, maybe in debt, unrealistic aspirations?

For Gareth Bale, good luck to the bloke, for millions of others not so good in the long run.

Re Agents.

Correct me if im wrong, but isn't the agent for Willian, that Kai Joorabachian(sp?)chappie the same one who acted for Tevez and Mascherano(sp?) ( that Liverpool footballer)causing a whole load of grief to West Ham and Sheff Utd amongst others.

Yet Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea still want to do business with him? Fact of life for big clubs.

IMO, it is of course weird that the season has started before the transfer window has closed.

the issue with the tevez/mascherano deals was that joorabchian was a part owner, rather than just an agent, and they didnt buy the players they merely borrowed them, and the premier league does not recognise 3rd partty ownership, whereas with will.i.an chelski have bought him outright, wether he WAS part owned by joorabchian is neither her nor there anymore

True what you say about 3rd party ownership. Not saying its a factor in Willian, just that two big clubs thought they had done a deal with him (the agent), only to fnd they hadn't. Yet such clubs still deal with the agents, always will.

As Murinho laughingly implied, it saved Chelsea doing a medical.

only a few small clubs you might have heard of ? think the clue is in the word invited

ajax, Anderlecht, arsenal, bilbao, Dortmund, Chelsea, pfc, juventus, olympiacos, paris st germain, Barcelona, celtic, fernabache, inter Milan, Liverpool, man city, Marseille, molde, psv, sporting Lisbon, spurs, wolsburg

and as for begging letters to barry in the paper how many letters were there 10,50,100 ? out of an average gate of 35000 that's pretty worthless

money laundering isn't it ?

"It's ironic that Spain is in dire straits and out with a begging bowl to get bailed out and here is one business that can afford to remit £85 million for just one person.

Simplistic view I know but just saying."

Real Madrid is a business, the national debts of a nation have nothing to do with an individual business.

Too fecking many

How people can pay hundreds of pounds to sit and watch cars drive past at 200 mph astounds me

The only way is pay to see such tosh is I they sent half the cars the wrong way round ... That would liven the dull Sport up

A guy I know commented only last week that it was cheaper for him and his wife to fly out to Barcelona , hotel and train fare and entrance to the Grand Prix than it was for him to attend the uk one

Work that one out

Besides its all about the car

Put a trained monkey in the best car and you will have same outcome

Makes me laugh at the GPs because they only see a small part of the track and miss about 80per cent of the race. It's a rch person's sport for sure. Now if they made it more like Death Race it might be worth watching.Until then. zzzzz

Football is a business, and you need the best tools/machine/people to make it work. Buying a player is a bussiness expenses.

They sell the match viewing to tv companies who in turn see the right to watch the match.

If you think players are paid too much, stop watching
