My child doesn't have one, he is 8. I personally dont think he needs one until he goes to senior school. He keeps asking but he won't get one. He does have an iPad though x |

"Why would an under 11 year old need a mobile"
I was reading the news and apparently nearly one in ten have mobiles aged FIVE.
My daughter has just got hers and she's nine. I don't live near her so for me personally it's nice to contact her without 'completions'. |

Bought my boys one when I split from their mum, they were 8, 9 and 13 at the time ... wanted to be contactable whenever they needed me. Got them some rubbish IQ phone on contract at first. Four years later I'm paying for 2 iPhones and a HTC all on contract. Vary from around £25-£35 per month - going to look at SIM only next time they're up for renewal. |

my nephew has some very basic touch screen samsung. he is 8 and was bought it by his grandad when he was going to London for the weekend in case he got lost or seperated from his parents.
its on PAYG so he cant rack up massive bills. he doesnt have internet access on it and to be fair he rarely uses it and forgets to charge it lol

"Thats one way of finding out what peoples kids are n how old... by the way my kids are 17/19 & 24 buy there own phones !!!! All boys x"
With all due respect, I'm not interested in ACTUAL ages or sex of children. It's the phones I need to know about and budget. |

Have 4 boys, the older ones got a phone (usually my cast offs) when they started high school (Age 11), with little or no resale value so unlikely to be mugged for them but useful in case of emergency or to keep us informed of being late home etc.. They had £10 credit on and it was expected that it would last the term as was for calling mum and dad only.
At 14/15 they were allowed an up to date new phone on a lowish rate contract (£15-£20 per month) and from 18 they pay for their own - 2 down, 2 to go lol!! |

Got my son a galaxy ace for his 14 B/day last year on 3 network, £12 a month, all you can eat data, 5000 text a month, 100 any network mins & 1000 3 to 3 mins. I also have the phone capped so that he can't use any minutes or text over his allowance and he also can't buy apps but can download the free ones.
Hope this helps

missus kids all have phones, all smart phones (think they are all blackberries of one type or another) however, the youngest (now 12 but has had one since 10) only ever takes his out when out on his own of an evening, so she can call him to tell him to come in.
never uses it otherwise and she has to charge it otherwise it would always be dead. |

Lot of stuff mentioned about ages of kids to be allowed phones.... its horses for courses, I had domestic complications and made sure both mine (aged 8 and 11 had phones. That way they could "call me on the hotline" without the "wicked witch of the west" getting involved.
They had cheap and nasty PAYG phones thta just made calls and sent txts, think they were Nokia 3*** series |

My son will get a phone when he goes to the academy not any time earlier! I was about 11when I got mine and my sisters were the same! Now their 15 and 19 both bought their iphones from saving money and both pay for their own credit. Why would any child under 11 need a touch screen phone! I had a basic nokia 3310 texted and called and I used to play snake 2 bah kids nowadays are growing too fast! |

Not sure if I mentioned this eariler but my daughter is nine and she has a galaxy ace mobile. She doesn't live with me so the touchphone is a great and multiable way of keeping close. I send her youtube links, messages and we just found out how to voice call each other. Super looking forward to our next one, in fact!

"If I had a child under 11 they wouldn't have 1 as they wouldn't be far enough away from me to warrant one."
this for me. if my 8 year old son is not in school he is with me, my husband or another responsible family member who does have a phone.
I do think it would be OK for children who's parents are not together to have a phone though. it is much easier for my husband to speak to his daughter when she has her own phone than it is to go through the ex. it is unfortunate that it has to be that way but it is. |

"And also how much the phone bill come up to? If you are thinking about buying them an mobile, how much for the phone and on bills are you prepared to pay?"
Would your business be assessing the value of nicking phones from kids |

My daughter had one at 10, a cheap £50 pay as you go one.......I have her number on my friends and family package, so she can contact me when she needs even if there's no credit.....she's 12 now and still got the same phone. |

At 11 mine had a Galaxy as she was going to and from school by herself and texted when she got there and was heading home. I had her on a £10 orange contract as this gave her unlimited text and 200 minutes. She never used her allowance and never incurred ant additional costs. Todate she has never incurred any additional costs without explicit permission. We had a block put on mobile date and premium rate numbers that still in place on her contract. |
