This is a tough one as all sports men/women give their all for their chosen sport and excel to their best and more to gain that elusive challenge .......to better them self.

Athletes such as mo farra or dame Kelly holmes etc gave it their best shot and won footballers such as Georgie best Gordon banks etc entertained us with their genious on the field.

But my own personal athlete has to be Muhamad ali....aka Cassius clay his genious in the ring coupled with the entertainer in him has inspired many a young boxer to take up the sport, even Henry cooper always tipped his hat in respect.

On a lighter note I always think weight lifters have guts and tenacity to lift those incredible weights and wonder ...just how they do it I struggle lifting the local paper (tongue in cheek)

"david beckham"

When you consider the huge increase in world population over the years, coupled to the wide availability of media fed information in countries around the world where it was almost inaccessible just a few decades ago, I’d agree Beckham will be one of the most famous people who’s ever lived….. way more famous that Ali… Pele… Owens etc

On The basis of fame I have to agree with Beckham as his popularity is still climbing thanks to his ambasadorial / mentoring roles . a worthy contender

"""the most famous sportsman/ woman of all time"""

Very hard to pin down as this Q embraces the whole of unknown future time but I'll say :

Beauty Hudson, undefeated female boxing heavyweight champion for 30 years between 2233 & 2263

The most famous I would say Beckham at the moment but only in terms of people having heard of him.

The greatest sportsperson I would say Muhammed Ali.
