Lizard.. Killing..

Apologies For this Thread Not being about Swinging etc..
But we need some Help.. Please.. x
We Have a Little GECKO Lizard That Needs Putting out of her Misery..
Its about 15 years old now and its had a good life - but recently had a little stroke or something.. (no pun intended)
And she is just not right anymore..
She wont open her eyes and head twisted sideways and no longer eating etc..
Spoke to a few Reptile Shops and vets and specialists etc and none will put her Down because of the drugs involved with putting them down Now being banned ??
Most people "off-record" and every other Forum or youtube etc.. just says the exact same - Smash it or Bang it over the Head.. !!!
I would chap-it-over-the head if it wasnt such a long-term pet but not got the Heart to do it and as such the poor mite suffers in the meantime..
What would You Do... serious question. |

The RSPCA and also PDSA will help, the secret is to actually turn up at the local vet, its easy to say no on the phone.
Alternatively find a forum for lizard owners and ask advice there. |

Awwww poor thing. Any vet with an ounce of humanity would do it humanely. How can they expect you to do it? I have a snake, and to 'put it to sleep' they say to cool it in fridge first then freeze it. But I couldn't do that!!!
Just turn up at vets with it. Hope you find some vet with common sense. Just cos its a lizard don't mean you haven't got feelings for it.
Good luck xxx |

We Have Tried about Five localish Vets and None of them would have anything to do with it.. said they couldnt help or even give Treatment/Medication or even a simple - Put to sleep..
one person from the a Popular Reptile Website - Suggested putting her inside a small airtight container.. until she went to Sleep.. |

"My advice would be to contact your nearest zoo who will have a specialist vet or gas chamber for euthanisation "
Thanks.. we cant even find a vet or even a Shop that sells Reptiles who would do this..
We did think the big zoo in Edinburgh but wasnt sure if they would want to provide such a reptile killing service..

When she won't swallow food and is weaker, just leave the food and let her digest what is in her stomach, but give her regular drops of water and let her fade comfortably. I had a really old rattie but he felt safe and he wound down when he was ready. Painful for you to watch but dignified and comfortable for her. And you will feel better afterwards for the care you took of her throughout. |

I don't think the Zoo has a reptile section any more. There are reptile shops in Fife, one in Dunfermline and one in Inverkeithing as far as I recollect. My daughter has various reptiles! Our local Vet does do reptile treatment too. |

Aww this is really sad and always tough to see a long term pet suffer
Hitting it with a hammer etc is out of the question in my mind just couldnt do it, would agree with above and let her fade comfortably ??
However if you feel you want to ease the pain perhaps get some cling film and wrap her up gently in it ?? Thsi way she will be straved of oxygen and drift of to sleep, you can then bury her etc knowing you sent her of nicely ??
May not be to your taste but just a suggestion if you want to ease the pain xx |

Could always gas the poor little bugger. Soak some cotton wool in bleach place it in the vivarium and then add a couple of drops of non bleach toilet cleaner to it and close the lid. It creates chlorine gas so only do this in a well ventilated area and don't breathe it in yourself either. |

Slightly off topic. But I read that of all people, George O'Dowd (Boy George) had to get rid of his lizard and will be getting another.
Apparently, it kept biting people and was extremely aggressive.
So he's buying a calmer chameleon.
Groan.....
Carry on... |

Put him into a small container and pop him into the freezer.
Apparently its painless as he quickly shuts down due to the cold, and of course doesnt warm up again if you leave him long enough. |

I was thinking about this last night as don't you do something similar with other reptiles to put them into hibernation? Obviously with that it's not such a low temperature but I would've thought that if you put her in the freezer she would simply go to sleep before she died... Could be kinder than starving, suffocation or blunt trauma... x |

I think I'd be inclined to take it to a vet and ask him to euthanize it in the correct manner. Granted it will cost you a few quid, but at least you'll know that the animal has been put to rest in the most humane way possible |

I'd try the vet - and if they said no, I'd try another. I can't comprehend ANY vet who'd said no to humane euthanasia based on the size of the animal ... our vet put our gerbil to sleep humanely and you can't get much smaller than that. |

Scratch that, I've just read up on it, apparently it has to go into the fridge first but I'd harrass your vet again first before you research that and say that you feel it is irresponsible to let an animal die slowly and painfully. I still would've thought that if they refuse to euthanise her humanely, they would at least be able to advise you on the best course of action. x |

If you know any welders ask to borrow some nitrogen. It is the main constituent of air but without the oxygen will not support life.
It is a painless and easy way for humans to end life with no gag reflex that you get with other gases as the body is used to inhaling it, so I would assume it would be the same for other animals.
Maybe ask a vets advice on using it as a painless way to end it's life. |

"Maybe ask someone you know to bang it over the head "
A true friend would, done a few chickens and a rabbit for friends. Before I get slapped down, I love animals and really dislike them suffering |

Thank You - For All Your Comments and Messages and Suggestions..
We asked local vets gallore until we was blue in the face and ears from phone calls..
Turns out - we Found A "PETS-AT-HOME" Branch that was willing to do it..
Couldnt Believe it when a Chain-Store agreed to Put our Lizard out of its Misery..
And Many So Called - Local Vets - would not touch it.. !!!

Would be interested to hear how the Pet shop intend to do it.
Sharp axe behind its head would be my method. "
Nice.. but you have obviously not done your research...
Most Lizards Brains will remain Active for up to 3 or 4 Hours after total Decapitation..
How would you fancy you little friend of fifteen years looking at you for the next few hours.. and it minus a body !!! |
