Finally I'm meeting a business advisor for the next few months to get my own business started. It's my first time, it's not your usual type of business and regardless I'm confident, knowledgeable and I'm hoping never to look back.

Anybody else nervous looking for a change of career, though, or do you remember how you felt the first time?

I hear ya, I've been wanting to get out for years. Thinking Florida near the boondocks or Louisiana bayous, anywhere that doesnt resemble society as we know it. With alligators.

I know the feeling.

I've been in accounts for 20 years, we have a new

accountant at work and she keeps asking how to do things, feeling frustrated as I clearly know more than her but she has a qualification and I don't, it will cost 600 pound plus to get the piece of paper, of.which I can't afford, trying to raise funds to pursue this, work are paying for her to do a course but not its offered to me, feeling frustrated and under valued, dont know what else I could do as I don't know anything else except numbers, profit and loss and giving advice to someone more qualified (on paper ) than myself

That totally sucks, you're clearly at managerial level though (hint). Hope things work out well for you.

I am accounts manager so not at lower level, in my eyes you would not ask someone to do something that you couldn't do yourself. PLUS.. she doesnt know how to do a VAT return which is a fundemental part of accounts. need ro make a few quid and fast. that piece of paper is obviously more important than experience.

I hope you get that sorted. Its a tough one because I believe in giving people a chance to learn and rise to the challenge, and yes, you should know how to do what you ask for otherwise you're managing the wrong business. But dammit, so many people lack the ability to learn, and especially when so many education programs are based on memory capacity and not learning ability.

Hun, I am a freelance bookkeeper, I am qualified by experience like you! I can't believe you have an accountant that doesn't know how to do a VAT return!! How ridiculous is that!

I work for myself hun and I get paid good money to go and do the accounts for other companys. Have the confidence in yourself to go out an do it on your own. When I first started working for myself it was scary as hell! But i love it now xxxx

I took the plunge 2 years ago..mine is a niche business and I've been doing it for over 20 years, but it still was a big decision. It's turned out well, but it is hard hard work. The paperwork side will probably test you the most. After a 9 hour day, sitting down to sort invoices, order parts, VAT return, etc, is a ballache! Im now just relaxing about the phone ringing and not worrying that ill have jobs for next week.

Mind you, as your own boss, you can take time out for meets whenever you want!
