So one of my cats had an accident tonight and had broken his leg....all that is bad enough but the vet has warned me its going to cost around £1800 to get it fixed as its a bad break & he needs an emergency operation to pin it.
I love my cats, they are like my kids, but bloody hell £1800 for a broken leg!
Thank heavens for pet insurance or I may have had to make a different decision |

Try pets at home. They were very reasonable when I took my cat there the Saturday before Christmas when he had an abscess in his leg.
They did ask if he was registered anywhere else as they can't be seen to take custom away from other Vets but I lied about that as I'm not having anyone tell me where I can spend my money. |

"Can I ask how much pet insurance costs? Approx say for a cat?"
I've just insured my new fur baby (16 mth Tom) and it cost round about £50...try the meerkat site for comparisons...my older (12 yo) girlie costs approx. £65 |

It's not that we don't trust vets, would just like to know how they arrive at £1800. Or is that they go to the same school as dentists |

My dog got hit by a car last year. He suffered a bad double break of his front leg which needed ortho surgery at a specialist vets as our vet couldn't do it. His final bill was around £3600, give or take a few quid. Thankfully he was insured but we found out we'd got him under insured and they only covered upto £2000 per condition per year.
I hope your kitty heals as well as Oscar did |

One of our cats fell ill and wasn't eating last Christmas 2 days before we left for holiday.
She wasn't improving and had neighbours due to come feed our 2 , so choice made for her to spend a few days at the vet to get well ...... the bill was £950 .... she was fine after and we never found the cause !!!
Hope your cat gets well soon |

I trust him explicitly and wouldn't take my babies anywhere else....he knows me and my boys, I trust him and its a fair price it's a nasty break with an emergency callout & operation.

I have a country vet and the prices are very reasonible. No fancy high street rent and rates to pay. Indeed small animal waiting room is a hallway and the clinic room is no bigger then a box room and it doubles as the operating room. The recovery room is also where the staff have their tea and is the general storage area
Fantastic vets though |

Once you find a good vet you tend to keep em, the practice I use is mainly large animal and equine with small animal on side. |

My baby is home, looking very sorry for himself with a almost completely shaved left side, anti lick collar and external metal work. Poor boy, it's breaking my heart seeing him like this......but in true Siamese style he is complaining about it at the top of his voice |

Jesus that's a lot! My eldest cat was run over three years ago, broken leg and hip, needed surgery to stitch up her bowels, two X rays, loads of tablets, and a 3 night stay - £850 all together. Still a lot, but not £1800 |

"there should be a national health service for pets.
we spent thousands on our poodle when she had eczema."
NHS isn't free tho you pay for it thro your tax, in effect its the same as having insurance, instead of playing X amount a month thro tax you pay it straight to your insurer, and if you don't work there's the PDSA |

Best bit is, I've only had to pay the excess, rest is directly billed to pet plan, not sure what I'd do without it in the past 18 hours,

I`m not so sure! My beloved torty Bracken got involved in an accident and I`m sure I didn`t pay more than £300 and they were talking about amputation. Then they saw she wasn`t insured so put her in a splint. She`s fine now and treats the very quiet road outside my house with a LOT of respect which pleases me no end! I`m sure a lot of vets rip off the insurance companies because they know they can! |

Forgot to add that she had broken her hock joint which is difficult to repair, hence why, presumably, they asked if she was insured? |

Vet prices vary according to the area you live.. so devon for instance will be a good deal less than london.
I work for one of the largest vet companies in UK and we in particular do cut our costs to match other local vets ie easy pets and the place evie mentioned.. Private medicine is expensive that is why we recommend everyone has some sort of insurance in place.
If i read correctly there was some emergency care needed which then possibly meant out of hours accident which will double the cost of the standard vet fees anyway.
our vets work from 830 am through till 7 often without a lunch break 5 1/2 days a week. they work nights and two late nights till 8 pm. saturday pm and sundays and after 7 it becomes after hours.
Its the company that sets prices not the vets.. they have to abide by the costs set on the computer they are not plucked out of the sky !.
your vet will give you a full print out of all costs extremely detailed on request as we do. no doubt when you pay the excess due.
Pet plan is a good insurance company and our vets will do a direct claim with them. there are many insurance companies that take 4 or 5 months to pay us on a DC which is another reason prices can be high..some .. one in particular (cant name it ) we wont even consider !!. the client must pay all upfront with them because they take so long to pay.
imagine the debt we have to deal with many thousands in insurance claims alone per month.
sorry you feel that vet costs are high. these young people have studied for 5 or 6 years and have debts of 40k plus just to get a job where some people are extremely mean and nasty to their faces in surgery. Our girls couldnt be more lovely caring vets dedicated and hard working.
glad the cat is home just make sure it doesnt lick the wound (if u should remove the collar)

we once took our dog to the vets because he kept on getting bald patches. he gave us some cream for it which cost about ?10 then went off on a tangent about fleas being on a cruise ship lying back on the sun loungers drinking cocktails for ages. then he tried to charge me over ?200. when i told them they have got no chance of me paying that they told me that i had been in there for nearly an hour. there is no way i was going to pay an extortionate amount to listen to the crap that he had been sprouting for so long. so chucked ?40 on the counter and walked out. |

Having fleas often causes bald patches because the animals scratch and lick to ease the irritation. The cream was probably fucithalmic ointment which eases the soreness. the animals still need to be treated for fleas and then a house spray because the fleas live in the house and only jump on animals to feed , they then disappear under the furniture until next feed. .
If the patches become constant they may have developed an allergy and need skin scrapes to find out what the problem is. these have to be sent off to a lab for testing. can you not see how prices escalate depending on the problem and how long it has been left before the owner decides to do something.
for those hard up there is always the PDSA...one can also contact the cat protection league and rspca if you are struggling to pay costs. |

Our local vet rents out its premises "after hours" to another vet !!! They charge 4 times the amount for the same treatment ! Our moggie was hit by a brick ( don't ask) and had a badly bruised and swollen paw , the after hours vet told us it would cost £800 to look at ... pain killer injection and do an x ray ... we declined the x ray and returned the next morning and got told it wasn't necessary to do an x ray as they new it wasn't Brocken and just bruised Paid out just short of £200 with one return visit for check up . We know three other people who had emergencies and all got quoted £800 to start with !!!! ( vet in Barton LE clay ) |

The cost was a bit of a shock, but I don't think it was extortionate or over the odds. It was an emergency call out, x rays, over night stay, operation on a Saturday plus all the associated things.
I am so thankful they were around yesterday. Thanks for the tip about licking, he's not too bad just sleeping on his heat pad, his brother however keeps trying to lick his wounds...... |

my neighbour has a veterinary practise, she explained that they have 2 price scales, one for insured animals and one for un insured animals,
a horse was lame, it was insured, so after initial examination, she x rayed horses leg for a standard charge of £700
( ultrasound)
with other treatment and checkups, insurance paid £2500.
she said if horse wasn't insured, she would of prescribed a dose of bute, box rest for 3 days and the bill would of been,£80. |

In our area most of the vets are owned by one company. They are based in norfolk, the vets earn an average wage just like anyone else . |

Tbh it's not so much they over charge but they offer a more comprehensive treatment plan
If insured X-rays and blood tests will always be first port of call where as if not, a vet will say we'll let's try this course of treatment and if all well and good we will carry on, if not we will reevaluate
My pooch has bad hips, knees , eye and ear problems and a skin condition to boot. My vet treats systematically and the bills are peanuts with all his prescriptions on repeat so no need to see the vet. Pooch is kept comfortable and my purse can cope. My last vet, when pooch was insured ( lived in London) would never start a treatment without bloods or X-ray. Cost the insurers a fortune.
Also we as owners tend to demand the same treatments for our pets as we would expect as humans. That costs.
My last dog needed a new heart. If heart transplants in dogs had been available I'm sure I would have demanded one and put him through hell for my own selfish need. Thankfully they weren't and we had him put to sleep at the right time at home, lying on my lap getting fed malteesers.
He went peacefully at the right time |

Chocolate is one of the most poisonous things you can give to a dog, followed by onion, dried fruit , grapes.
there are several things that are dangerous for a dog.

When gordon our miniature yorkie was a pup he was diagnosed with a portal systemic shunt. At one point vet wanted to put him down, but we said we had to try everythinf first. Referred to small animal hospital in bristol, we were given two options medical management which would give him 18 months or surgical management approx 6 years. We opted for the later. Kept him 8 years when he went into liver failure and we had to let him go. The vet at bristol used to ring every few months to find out how he wad doing.
Dread to think of the overall cost of his treatment, he was insured. But would have sold my body to pay for treatment if he wasnt.
Our shirley pup 8 years is also insured.xx |

The fees are set by head office not the vets. We have no leeway on prices the code is there for each treatment and that is the cost we have to charge.
The vets work for the company what they take has no bearing on there annual wage.. There are very few vet owned practices in our area now ,because the hours are so long if it is your business you would have to be available 24hrs a day.
The vets dont ban clients they are their to look after animals. Usually if a client is abusive they are given the choice of another vet or leave.
Doctors surgery's can remove clients from their list if they are troublesome. Private medicine can charge what they like for treatment .. this is why there is so much variation on the cost of cosmetic ops..
