If you take a look around the forums, maybe even use the search option, you will find a few threads asking this, some interesting comments too.
There are so many reasons why people say can't to both, and in some cases they may well be able too, just don't want to advertise it.
Hotels and playing local are the obvious answers here.

It's possible if they are a distance away that they may get to travel occasionally, but not enough to state so on their profile.
It's possible they may wonder if you can occasionally travel but not enough to state on your profile.

I like the hotel meet as it saves on lots of problems if you don't get on. Both can leave for example on a first meet. People will be flexible though if you ask what they mean by it. If not then you don't meet do you.
