My dog is getting put down

I have a ridge back that lives with my ex. I have had to agree as a sensible dog owner for him to be put down as he got out the garden today and pinned a lady against a car. She says he has bitten her but not seen any proof of bite marks. However I can't have him do this to anyone else I am sat here crying coz he is such a loving dog. But I can't have him getting out and jumping up at people in the village where he is. I can't have him here so feeling very low right now  |

Is it possible that the "bite marks" are actually marks from his claws/ paws ?
In their panic and distress is it possible that this person was confused .... ?
I'd go with the other suggestion and see what can be done about securing the garden and also options of soft muzzles/ halters as a permanent wear and a hard muzzle for going out ....

Specifically to the OP I have a 3yr old Alsation which is an ex police dog who had..er..issues that I rescued.
But I found a local dog psychologist that worked with him for a few months and now whilst he id wary of new people at first he's fine.
I wouldn't feel obligated to put him down at this point.
Try and see if you can find someone trsined to find behavioural/problematic behavioural patterns and correct them?...
Unless he is an old dog and "cant teach an old dog new tricks" and all that...but still worth a shot?
Anything is worth a shot rather than put him down? |

Have the police been in contact? Has the lady pressed charges? If no then do not euthanise, get bigger fence. If the lady has been to a GP and had a tetanus and bite marks witnessed then its a bit more difficult.
Is there no way you can keep the dog yourself rather than it stay with your ex? |

I have a dog and it would rip out my heart to have him put to sleep for any reason other than illness please think twice bout getting him put down must be some other way even if re homeing him good luck pls let us know what happens big hugs |

I hope you can get this sorted without putting him down
I've worked with many animals seen as being on their last chance
My speciality is reptiles now but I had a staffy/collie cross which was going to be put down because of it's past
It taught my special needs daughter to walk
Ridgebacks look scary to a lot of people but in my experience are some of the most beautiful companions you can have |

One thing my ex is not an irresponsible owner and the dog is normally a very well behaved pet it has shocked me. |

i can sympathise with you ...my little dog died this morning she was 16 and ive never felt so sad in all my life ive a pain in my heart and i think i could sob forever. ...sorry to hear about your dog hope you feel better soon x gilly |

I feel ur pain op.my 14 year old yorkie got all n I mean all his teath pulled today n he's looking up at me with his sad brown eyes.im feeling sooooooo sorry 4 him....i hope U can sort it cause U no know there like a part of d family  |

Having worked and lived with animals most of my life I can tell you even the most loving animal can snap if it feels either it or it's owner is being threatened and has nothing to do with how responsible the owner is.
If a report has been made to the police it would still have to be investigated and evidenced gathered. This gives you time to prove the dog isn't a threat so get in touch with a animal behaviourist.
If no report has been made then you have time to put in precautions to make sure it never happens again or chance to rehome. |

Some great advice already been given all i can add is don't let your ex or yourself jump to any rash decisions on this unless you have been advised by the police,just take your time. You might regret putting him to sleep later on and there's always other options of re-homing if she cant handle him anymore. Mrs x |

It's too late she jumped this morning Remus was put too sleep after I talked to get until very late early morning. I thought she was going to wait but no she called the vet and he is gone. I am grieving right now. |

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. if you live in reading and your ex in yorkshire ,cant help feeling there was some vendetta against remus.
i live in yorks and before i moved knew some fellow dog walkers that had ridgebacks and they took them to crufts
so people could get to know their character as they are nice dogs.

no bad dogs. just bad people, a ridgeback is a powerful dog, the law states that if a dog frightens someone, it is a legal offence.the dog doesn't have to bite or hurt, just scare,
from may last year, all the following are offences with a fine up t £500
no identity disc, with specific info,
no poo bags on you when walking
no collar or lead when outside your house.
and from may 2014
all dogs have to be microchipped.  |

If you can't afford a new fence right away think about a ground anchor and strong chain as a temporary measure when he's outside. It's not nice seeing a dog chained up but I'm sure he would prefer that to being put to sleep. And as others have mentioned you could look at re-homing.
I had to split a garden into two as it was easier and cheaper than securing the whole garden. |
