Just on news he has been charged with nine sexual offences.
Whilst the alleged offences we must remember he like others are innocent till proven guilty and thats how it should be. |

I honestly don't think they should be named until there proven guilty.
If he's proven innocent, its highly unlikely he'll but looked at the same again
I hope he is innocent though |

There are two thing that come to mind on this one is there so no smoke without fire the other is with so many celebrities suddenly in this situation are some people jumping on band wagons with the hope of a civil case to follow with financial benefits.
I do hope all these cases get a fair unbalanced trial and justice is seen to be done. |

I'm the same, if he is proven innocent without a shred of doubt, his accusers should serve the sentence. If he's guilty then lock him up, he's 83 now like, don't think he'll be in there long |

I was really hoping there would no case to answer at all.
My childhood feels like it is being dismantled. He's the one I would have thought would have no charges to answer not Jim Davidson. |

Can that ever happen now? Will Savile get the benefit of 'innocent till proven guilty'? |

Lol. And yet you find the need to announce he has been charged, then state innocent until proven guilty! Why even bring these things up UNTIL they have been proven guilty? Or, as the case may be, NOT guilty? |

Proving innocence is often impossible. That's why the burden lies on the prosecution. |

Exactly this. . Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups ain't it. But, thats what happens when 'enlightened' folks get together and discuss the merits of a sexual allegation charge against a celebretory. Even although they know fuck all about the case! |

Not particularly. Just my prejudice against Jim Davidson predisposes ME to prefer it to be him rather than Rolf.

I don't disagree with you. Assumption of facts is no basis for law. What I was reflecting is the fact that as a child I grew up with all these household names. I liked Rolf but found Jim a bit creepy.

I found both JD and RH a little difficult to believe at first,
Different times, different morals and cultures
Time has passed, very difficult to prove
Very sad all round. The alleged victims need to be protected above all else |

I'd rather those people wouldn't waste anyone's time. They may well have the affect of stopping genuinely abused people from coming forward for fear of being tarred a liar.

I do wonder though on what the actual charges are... I think most are just jumping on the band wagon to be fair. I'd like to believe Rolf utterly innocent and from what I saw when he was first accused I think he will be found innocent.
I do wonder how they are judging these crimes as a pat on the backside now could land you a sexual assault charge.. back then it was kinda the norm.

You are right in saying that it was the 'norm'- did not make it right and as someone who was subjected to sexual harassment at work it was not something to laugh about. However, as it WAS going on everywhere it was more difficult to stand up and protest about it. These days it is easier to be heard and not laughed at for being 'intolerant'or a 'stuck up bitch'
I agree though, that anyone who is accused of these crimes should be afforded some degree of privacy until they have been proven guilty. Mud sticks, after all. |

Unfortunately a lot of people have the 'guilty until proven innocent' mentality, some even aren't satisfied when someone is proven innocent. Rolf Harris is going to get a lot of stick now and I wonder if this spells the end of his career. |

Of course it will. There will always be the 'no smoke without a fire' crowd! I've always thought it morally wrong to name anyone (be it a celeb or a normal bloke in the street) BEFORE they are found guilty. Yet the alleged victim is never named. |

Not just the end of his career but the end of him ,apparently when first arrested he went into deep depression.I hope like others he is innocent. |

I was going to bring this up as well.. It is one thing to fight allegations of sexual assault, but quite another to deny the existence of "Indecent Images" when they have been found.. Having said that, I have loads of indecent images on my PC of my good lady doing all sorts of things.. We do not know what they consisted of, but I fear it can't be good..
Like many others, I am feeling deflated and am hoping that he can prove his innocence.. |

But, isn't that assuming that rolf is the only person to have access to his computer? Could it not be argued that someone else downloaded some pics either knowingly or completely innocently? After all, has NO-ONE on the internet recieved an e-mail and an indecent image has popped up when its opened? |

The arguement in favour of anonymity is valid as those later proved innocent are still tarnished.
The arguement against is that by naming those charged other relevant information or cases may come to light that have bearing.
The biggest problem is the media/public forming an opinion on guilty or innocence before due process has been followed. |

I can honestly say that I have never opened an email and had indecent images "pop" up! Of course, someone could have been on his PC and downloaded the images, that can be quite innocent of Rolf. But the charge is of "making indecent images of children". That means it has been saved to his file system and not just in the temp folder..
I have no idea what the truth of the matter is and I do believe innocent until proven guilty, but the police would not fabricate this evidence so we will have to wait and see... I kinda hope you are right, but then someone else is responsible and I'll bet Rolf will carry the can in that case... |

Aaah, see, i'm not very comp wise so not a clue about file systems and temp folders. But i did open an e-mail i recieved once and it was a pic of of a woman with everything on show asking me to "join her on such and such a site". So my point was, it could have been a pic of something illegal and i wouldn't have known until i opened it. |

The thing with how indecent images are now seen is things that you and I may seem innocent can now be seen as indecent. At uni we were shown 12 images and asked to say which were indecent... Most to me looked like normal photos I would have.. (btw we were learning about paedophiles and how they think differently etc.) Anyway, it turns out all of them could have been.
One was a glorious beach photo.. but just to the left was some kids that were in various states of nudity..
But then as I am sure many parents know even photos at school plays now are often restricted and you have to sign an agreement... So let's not judge till we know all the facts.
Rolf is an artist and may have been looking to do a painting that to a gentleman of his age was sweet not dirty... But I just hope him and all the others get a fair trial.
I can see my own dad ending up in trouble as he still finds it acceptable for a playful bottom slap and makes comments to lady's.. he is unlikely to change at 87. But it does worry me. |

Now you are just showing off!! lol.. Yeah I suppose that someone who doesn't "know" how the file system works in a very basic way, like an 83 year old guy, may not have even seen the file if it was put there by someone else..

Love this post, Cali.. It is right that back in the day pictures of children on the beach or even playing in water at the park could well be in various stages of undress. It was also the "norm" for those with cameras to take pictures of whatever was about.. Perfectly innocently!
In the last three weeks, Wellingborough town centre hosted a "Beach". On Facebook, one young mum was shouting on one of the spotted sites that a paedophile had been taking pictures of the kids! It was in fact a Grandparent taking pictures of his grandchildren! Kinda illustrates the state we have got ourselves into.. Sad indeed |

My computer and my walls have pictures of the kids in the bath and naked out in the garden etc. How are we supposed to embarrass them when they get older and bring girlfriends/boyfriends home without such innocent images?

Remember the Julia Somerville story?"
His charges are not based on innocent bath-time photos of his own child so hardly a comparison.
He faces four separate charges of making indecent images of children plus other changes of sexual assault.
Yes, innocent until proven guilty, but I'm staggered by the amount of people who appear to be defending him based purely on their fond childhood memories and it's that kind of attitude that leave child molesters to cause the irreparable harm they do.
Pedophiles don't wear neon signs on their heads. They can be warm, friendly and engaging. They can be your colleague, your friend, your parent, your partner... |

Yes but we havent been given any details.. and to be fair I think its awful that we can know all this.. it should come out after trial...
Many people are charged with things that later turn out to be easily explained.. Thing is with this... we dont know what it is..and because of the nature of the case.. unless your in the jury you will never know what the actual photos are..
But I would like to think that this is a lot of noise about something that turns out not to be much at all. |

I'm not defending him but I'm not condemning either. My post was that it saddens me because I had fond memories from my childhood image of him (and others).

I don't disagree with you. Assumption of facts is no basis for law. What I was reflecting is the fact that as a child I grew up with all these household names. I liked Rolf but found Jim a bit creepy.
And on the reverse of that coin is Stuart Hall. Who i thought was a likeable guy when i was growing up. And we all know what he is now.
I know. I was shocked about Stuart Hall too. How could the jovial man from the telly with the funny laugh that made me giggle as a child be anything but good and kind? "

This thread strikes me as the same as people that don't mind eating cows but object to eating guinea pigs and dogs because they're 'cuddly'.
If it was someone a little more unsavoury, the hang 'em high, give me five minutes on my own brigade would be out in force but because it's cuddly old Rolf...

"Have you all noticed all the accused have been tv celebs !
They have not even started on all the pop/rock stars yet. That alone footy players, the list goes on. "
Famous people have a tendency to assume they can do what they want with who they want - and should be roundly punished if it involves the under aged and the innocent |

"Just on news he has been charged with nine sexual offences.
Whilst the alleged offences we must remember he like others are innocent till proven guilty and thats how it should be."
I trust any in the forum feeling inclined to snap judgements will remember the Lord McAlpine case. |

"...... Could it not be argued that someone else downloaded some pics either knowingly or completely innocently? After all, has NO-ONE on the internet recieved an e-mail and an indecent image has popped up when its opened?"
If you find yourself with an unwanted image having been sent to your computer, just make sure you delete it immediately. In the unlikely event the cops come calling, provided there's no trail suggesting you sought that image out, you'll be on fairly safe ground. If it happens more than once, call the cops.
What's a bit more worrying is the trend for certain video/ tubes websites to create false links to sites you wouldn't have picked given a fair choice in their quest for advertising revenue.
If, for example, you click on a link which says hairy grannies and it takes you to bald teenagers ...... how do you prove your innocence? |

My childhood feels like it is being dismantled. He's the one I would have thought would have no charges to answer not Jim Davidson."

It's just mental how a generations childhood as in tv idols, household names can be destroyed in such a short time with everything that's happened.
I hope Rolf is innocent, it's starting to feel like a witch hunt for any tv personality from around the 80's.
just because a handful have been found guilty its starting to look like everyone from that time is being looked upon as a possible suspect.
I agree names shouldn't really be made public til further investigations have bern made and hard evidence found because unfortunately in this country the stigma seems to stick even if found innocent. |

"im glad jim davidson was found not guilty i seen him on this is your life once and he seemed like a nice bloke.
he is a bit sexist and racist but some of his stuff is funny. not one of my favourate comediens."
He hasn't been found 'not guilty'...never charged nor been to court.
The CPS said it had considered 10 allegations against Mr Davidson but said there was "insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction in relation to all complaints". |

I agree. With most innocent til found guilty. I know victims all deserve closure but the investigation needs to be fair and through or we will be creatng more victims |

Remember the Julia Somerville story?
He is being charged with making indecent images of minors. He is an artist, perhaps he was painting his grandkids in the buff or a friends kids for them. Nudity isn't ALWAYS sexual. Are we going to start covering up all the genitalia of cherubs etc? |

How many people are going to apologise and hold there hand up saying they were wrong when they jumped to conclusions because of their "no smoke without fire" logic, if it turns out he is not guilty? |

I'm not defending anything that he may or may not have done. If found to be guilty I hope he and all the others burn in hell.
Back in the day, celebs were like gods, and us mere mortals used to lie about their age to get into clubs to see celebs. We have all lied about our age at some point, yes? So if in a club where everyone was supposed to be 18, a celeb likes the look of a girl in there, is it wrong to assume the girl is 18 or more...? Wonder if any of these girls are coming forward as accusers now?
Also wasn't there a Rolling Stone or someone of that ilk marry a girl seriously underage?
Just my thoughts. |

The victims should receive the greatest possible care available.
My point was that if allegations are made and turn out not to be true, unfortunately in this country, Shit sticks so to say and if any are wrongfully accused then how will it affect their lives from then on to.
I just feel that sometimes to much is spread across the media so quickly that even without hard evidence they're judged to be guilty already.
My wording may not be great but I hope you get my point |

You know my first thought when I read it was I wonder if he had a photo or something that to him seemed innocent and was going to use it in a painting etc... I think we will have to wait and see... But it's wrong that people are named first.. |
