Mini Human Brain

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Scientists have grown mini "human brains" in the lab. The "brains" are at the same level as at a 9 week foetus.

Adult skin cells were used to grow the "brains" and have survived for nearly a year but didn't grow any larger as there was no blood supply.

Any thoughts?

I think it's wrong on many different levels.

"I think it's wrong on many different levels. "

Why?

It may lead to an understanding of autism or Alzheimer's.

At what point would we consider a brain to be sentient?

Whoa whoa whoa, they haven't grown "mini brains"! They've managed to grow 3D brain tissue from stem cells, it's just inert tissue, no different to culturing skin cells. It's immensely useful. If we are able to grow replacement tissue in a lab rather than have to use organ donation, there will be no rejection issues as the organs will be made from your own tissue.

That is why I hate religion as it slows down and sometimes stop scientists making breakthroughs for "incurable" diseases/conditions. Any development I see is a plus and they should carry on with the good work as who knows where it will lead. How are people meant to discover cures without tests

Having just read a little more on it, they're called cerebral organoids and they're being used to test drugs and other treatments for disease and other neurological conditions. It's not really "living tissue" in the same way that we've grown functioning liver and kidney tissue. It's still awesome though and better than using mice or other test animals.

I agree - it's fascinating - i know some of the research can be controversial but it's vital Z

Maybe it will help with people who suffer from numerous mental (sorry if its the wrong word), whether its schizophrenia, paranoia or on a slightly different note people who are mentally slow, suffer with autism, etc. People including doctors are focusing more on the body than the brain and that's where the problem lies as they say the brain is a complicated thing. That's because they don't do enough research as they are concentrating on other parts of the body, hopefully this breakthrough can go towards curing the illnesses I have mentioned as well as the mental illnesses I haven't mentioned.

3D brain tissue from cell cells isn't a good tabloid headline though. I just repeated the BBC headline and did use quotation marks around "human brain" in the text.
