Anyone know how grim the traffic is on this notorious bit of road these days? Have I got to set off at 3 in the morning with two young children to miss it?

Very unpredictable and it doesn't take much to shut it. Last Saturday I was stationary for @ 1hr southbound between 13 & 14 due to a coach fire. 15 down past 20 is frequently heavy and slow moving..

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Obviously you can't predict an accident, but I used to drive along it mid-afternoon and never had problems. I guess it depends on what time of day you want to go.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Look on the internet before you set off.

Yes down from 15 is where it gets heavy, isn't it? What's the latest you'd say we could be on it before it builds right up? And thanks for the real time info

We can get into Pontins Weston Super Mare from 12.

Isn't the motorway likely to be equally busy regardless of whether you take two children or not?

Good suggestion. I need to plan a bit in advance though with two children. Bearing in mind taht last weekend was b/h I'm gonna see if there's a site saying how it's been over the last few weeks. Thanks

Yes but do I get them up in the middle of the night (which is what I've done other times without them) to miss bumper-to-bumper traffic for miles and miles or risk it at a more civilised hour? That's why I'm asking for up to date info. I haven't done the trip for a year or two.

Good idea but I'm on a super sore-away Sun holiday. It's the only way I can afford to take the kids away during summer hols. Maybe when they're a bit older. We wanna go camping in West Wales too. Some great camp-sites and beaches

That's good but it's the last bit where the big problems are; We get off at J21 for Weston Super Mare. I really do hate get getting caught up. And I think travelling early is the only sure way not to. Maybe I'll set off 6ish and spend a bit of time on Weston beach before we can get into Pontins at 12

mate the traffic really isn't that bad normally so no need for a 3 am start

tends to get very bad on the Friday before a bank holiday

and around Bristol for the morning rush hour but unless there is a bad crash that you cant predict I don't think you will have a problem

Truro

M5 northbound is usually pretty good. I normaly do Truro to Wolves in 4.1/2hrs.

Southbound, there's a build up of traffic at Bristol, Jtn15-20, then Weston Super Mare Jtn22 then Taunton Jtn25, but generally keep off peak times and it's not too bad.

Does anyone know if the Bristol M5 roadworks are a permanent living exhibit now? I recall there have been roadworks there for about 10 years.

Are they building a bloody Pyramid or something?

if traffic jams ahead come off onto M4to london , then M32 into bristol , through bristol onto A370 to weston misses the build up but little longer in distance nicer drive though xx

Think we'll be holiday camp pool unless, as I say, we get there early. Then again we should make the effort to go for it with the buckets and spades at least once, shouldn't we

Are they building a bloody Pyramid or something?"

They are part of the living sculpture that is intended for 2052 when Bristol is the European City of Culture.

Thanks. Multi-map sez just under 3 hours for our journey. So maybe I'll set out 8ish and hope the worst of Bristol's rush hour has gone when we get that far

Trouble with that is that you would hit the M6 into Birmingham at rush hour which can be a nightmare

Junction 21 sucks at the mo - and will do til late 2014 as they're 'improving' the exit. The roundabout is often chocka and there's long queues into Weston.

Nothing you can do about it but leave as early as possible and keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks to all the people who took the time to answer my post. Very helpful. Still not sure what to do though! So wish I could just set off 9ish to be there for 12. Set off at 7, early enough to miss it in Brum, and that'll put us in the thick of it as we near Bristol. Wish there was something like a big water park close by we could visit. Sitting here typing it's looking like 5ish is the best option with a few hours mud pie making on Weston beach before we can get into Pontins at 12.

my parents go to weston every year around this time.

they set of about 7 and are rarely any later than half 10 (with a stop at micheal wood and a caravan in tow) so dont get too worried about the possibility of traffic.

why not head through kiddi and miss out the birmingham stretch of the 6/5 all together?

Thanks for that. I had an horrendous time on the M5 one year about 8 - 10 years ago now. That was going to Dorset on a Saturday at the height of the hols period. Since then the few other times I've done it I've travelled in the night. As I say I've got my two young boys now though and we can't get into Pontins before 12. Re. the first bit I'm M42 onto M5 from where I live.

Thanks

And completely changing the subject I used to have a 'friend' in Telford.
