Well Stephen Fry does have an account.
A # is like tagging something so you can follow that particular topic. Eg, when the something is on the telly or a football game is on people will hashtag it #ManUtd or #Eastenders something like that. If you click on the hashtag you will see all the other comments people have made on that topic. Happens a lot with big news stories as well. I cringe when I see things like #JustinBeiberRulesTheWorld though.
When you see an @ it means someone has mentioned a particular twitter user and that is how you have chats with people. Like if someone said @Olivia_k it would come up in my mentions tab (and no Olivia_K is not my twitter name FYI) so you can have conversations directed at one or more people.
That help a bit? |

"Oh need to know just about everything but first of all what is the difference of an. # and @ ?
"
# indicates a hashtag, and is an easy way to highlight a term you wish to make searchable.
For instance, if i wrote a tweet saying
"SJ has mighty fine #tits"
then anyone on Twitter could search for #tits and my tweet would be discoverable via the search.
@ indicates a mention. So if you @SJ, then you are either sending them a tweet, or mentioning them in a tweet. |

Cry some more. I use it for my job. It is okay if you don't "get" social media. Just go about your life without the need to bash things that don't involve you m'kay? |

Yup, pretty much. Your tweet could simply be #biscuits, and anyone searching for the hashtag would see your tweet as well as others that have used the hashtag #biscuits globally.
Useful for tracking metrics or just keeping up with a (trending) topic. |

Plus different people use it for different things - like all social media.
Yes there are a lot of self inmportant wankers on twitter. Yes there are some boring people who tweet nothing more than "I am standing in the line at the post office". But there are also a lot of seriously interesting twitter accounts out there as well. It's like anything, just don't follow the ones you dislike, and follow the ones you find funny or interesting like I do.
Or quite simply, if you don't like twitter don't use it at all. |

Its none of your business. As for the latter half of the question, our industry adapted to the changing landscape, and incorporated social media into our marketing. It benefits us very well. Again, its okay if you don't "get" it. |

Yes the hash tag can be anything, however do a titter search to see if there is one already in use as there may be a slight spelling change
I also use it exclusively for work, the only way I can keep up with developments in my field
I also find that twitter embedded in flipboard is a better experience as flipboard will automatically display any embedded content, ie picture URLs or blog posts |

"So how do you let others know about you or find you ?
If I sent a tweet without an # at the end nobody would ever see it if I had no followers ? "
Start by following people you find interesting and amybe strike up a conversation with them if they say something you're interested in. If you come across a # topic of something you find interesting join in the conversation. Then people will see you in the # conversation, and if they like what you said they may follow you. |

Just for consideration there are two recent situations where twitter has been used to prevent governments from supressing political situations
But also the recent abuse of women
So much like a pencil, it depends on how you use it and for what. |

If you start with no followers, you can search for interesting accounts and follow them. Then tweet at them every so often. Sometimes, if people find your tweet interesting, they will follow back.
If you create a tweet, only those who follow you can see it on their feeds. If you include a hashtag #, then those who search for that tag can see your tweet. If you @ mention someone, then only those who follow you and the person you @ mentioned can see that tweet (unless they scroll through your profile)
It just takes a bit of practice. |

Most companies these days are using social media - it's about the sharing of information or using social media as a marketing and selling tool.
It is absolutely all about the changing landscape and how people are sharing information and getting their company's profile and products out there. |

Yes. They would see your tweets if they search for that particular hashtag. So you would then come up in their feed and if they found you interesting they could tweet you directly and/or follow you. |

An example might explain it
If you had no followers and you wanted to add a comment about a tv programme ou might
I can't believe they used butter #Masterchef
Everybody now searching for that hash tag will see your post
They might then click on your user id and view your other posts and if they like you will basically add you to their feed
Two ways to use twitter.. Your feed and the search options |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Also tell people your Twit name.
I'm new to it all too as I committed to joining as part of my work.
It depends what you want to use it for but think about your Twit voice - how you present yourself, being consistent, the sorts of things you want to post.
My work covers so many different subject areas that I have found it a handy way to get bite-sized bits of information that I can then follow up if it's relevant to the thing I am doing at that time.
Oh, the little envelope is direct messages. I only discovered that recently.

Ahhh yes, DMs. If you follow someone, they can Direct Message you (basically a private tweet). That person has to be following you back for you to Direct Message them as well. |
