Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I'm watching QI and they have been showing Victorian Hidden Mother Photographs.

I've just looked them up - very strange.

yup

I know i'm not a fan of having my photo taken (in 'real life') but that seems a bit extreme!

Not odd really.

The women weren't hiding as such.

They wanted a pic of their children.

Pics in those days weren't instant.

You had to sit for ages. So the mums tried to keep the kids in place for the pic. Nothing sinister.

I understand that but it would have been lovely to have a picture with their child.

Hidden body parts?"

I was thinking more along the lines of hidden objects and having to guess the object.

There were countless school pics in the olden days where a "cheeky chappie" would appear twice in the same photo.

This was due to the photo having to be taken in stages and said "cheeky chappie" moving from one end of the line up to the other

‘This was a practice where the mother, often disguised or hiding, often under a spread, holds her baby tightly for the photographer to insure a sharply focused image

It's not really that odd, photography took quite a while and therefore someone had to hold children to keep them still. I'd imagine families wanted just photographs of their children, NSA we do today.

Perhaps slightly more sinister are the photographs of the dead children they took as portraits. It wasnt looked on as morbid to have a photograph of a deceased child or other family member, often propped up against the living members of the family.

Some countries/cultures still do the dead people pictures.

Is it a bit weird that I find the post-mortem pics fascinating, yet the hidden mother ones really blooming creepy?

I actually just got lost in the internet thanks to this. Ended up on a really interesting/funny site that I'm going to have to investigate more when I've got a day free!
