EU to ban menthol cigarettes!

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Here's one for smokers, the lovely people in Brussels are planning on banning menthol cigarettes and 12.5g pouches of hand rolling tobacco in an attempt to make smoking less attractive to young women.

Anyone else sick and tired of being 'nannied' by people outside of Britain (and often from within too!).

So, you want young women to have cancer? You should put that on your profile

"So, you want young women to have cancer? You should put that on your profile"

Did I actually say that?

For your information my sister had cancer twice before she was twelve, so your comment is not only stupid but offensive to me.

The question is asked, and the point of the thread, was is anyone else sick of being nanied and having our freedom of choice taken away from us by people who don't live here...

I apologise for not knowing your families medical history.

Anyway, I was joking, I think people over the age of 18 should be allowed to do whatever they want, they can asses the risks and take responsibility of their actions.

You'll be glad to hear the legislation was put forward by a German minister, not surprising really as they always want to ruin everyone's fun, especially the Poles as they're Europe's biggest tobacco manufacturer...

From what I have read they believe methol's, being white, are considered to be more stylish in the eyes of young women. Why not just make them the same as normal fags and not apply a silly ban...

Before this turns into the inevitable......

They'd be better off just banning all cigarettes. I'm sure they will cope with the loss of that tax revenue.

People will just start smuggling them in from outside the EU.

I thought this was an old story from last autumn, it's still only at proposal stage and only affects flavoured tobacco products doesn't it?

On the continent flavoured tobacco products are seen as hip and fashionable by young smokers, and they seem to be the group aimed at here.

I'd not heard it before today, my local newsagent has a sign up on his tobacco counter...

I'm a menthol smoker, not because I think it looks more stylish, just because I prefer the taste, I shouldn't think it would make any difference to how many young women smoke.

It's crazy though before long you won't be able to make any decisions yourself x

I know, there's no magic bullet. Raising prices will just result in more disposable income going to fuel the habit.

I just mean its counterproductive to ban one type/ style of cigarette. If someone really wanted a fix, they'd smoke a non menthol one too.

The first proposal that included 'slim' cigarettes was thrown out and the second draft that solely aimed it's sights at flavoured products has passed it's first stage.

The second stage however involves and needs much more agreement from the majority of members states and that is certainly not a given.

In Spain and Italy you see so many young girls smoking the multi coloured and flavoured cigarettes, it's seen as fashionable and that's what certain members of the EU want to outlaw.

So on that basis I would agree with the proposal myself.

Anyone remember Sobranie Cocktails? Now there was a cool and stylish fag!

I've always hated menthols, rather smoke camel shit (always thought Marlboro were made from that)

(Non smoker currently (again))

I'm currently laid on the sofa wishing the weekend away to find out Wednesday if I have cancer again!! ( Brain tor). And I smoke, those nice fresh burst things with the clicker lol. No one is going to tell me to stop etc its my life my choice should I have cancer again (previously had stage 2 cervical) I'm gonna go out of this life doing what I want, who I want and when I want. If they ban them ile buy buckshe ones if and I say if I don't decide to give up. Wonders what the next ban will be???

I agree with it where the edict comes from is not important as sureky peoples health more important.

As someone else mentioned would folk prefer folk to run risk of cancer.

As my parents both died from smoking related diseases it can only be good.

I think the proposed ban is to tackle the 'sexiness' of certain flavoured cigarettes, 'sexy' as seen by easily influenced fashionable young women, who I would like to think you would agree could do with an obstacle to help them protect their health and maybe save them from suffering from cancer.

It will help put them off because young women (mainly on the continent) are being drawn into the smoking habit by the fashionable coloured and flavoured cigarettes you see in many EU countries.

Why would anyone argue against anything that might encourage impressionable young people not to take up what is an addiction?, and that is proven to have a negative impact on the lives of millions?

My answer?.....Only a selfish person

Name calling?

I would like to see EVERYTHING possible done to stop impressionable young people from starting the smoking habit....that is I think the responsible line to take.

If you think that young people should not have obstacles put in their way as regards starting smoking then I see that as a very selfish attitude.

That's not name calling by the way, unless you see the word selfish as an insult.

Why dont the EU pass a law to lock up anyone under the age of 21.

Keep everyone in prison till they are 21 then that way they will have total control over every aspect of their lives.

On the other hand,we could just leave the dinosaur EU and get on with running OUR COUNTRY OUR WAY.
