Serious question to all
After reading threads and to be honest enjoying the odd discussion I have to ask why when people say something that's not agreed with they're accused of reading the mail ?
Thank you for explaining in advance |

I think it is because it is a put down and said to make the person shut up.

Its perception of people who read the daily mail, to some the paper can be a bit preachy with its news/articles as if it is telling its readers what to think because they don't have the intelligence to read things and come to their own decisions. |

The Daily Mail is a vile publication, it openly supported Oswald Bailey's politics in the 1930's. And while it may not be as extreme these days it still has some pretty intolerant _iews. So yes it is used as an insult but it's not just about the political _iew, there is a scaremongering mindset that relies more on fear and opinion than fact.
I have ever used it directly at a poster, though I think that I have stated on threads about immigration and benefits (before I just started ignoring them) that the _iews were similar to the Daily mail's comments section. I think it;s a lazy insult, in much the same way as when people on the rightside of a debate throw in terms like "politically correct" and "guardian reader". Personally I'd rather debate without using cheap and easy insults. |

Its one of the reasons I stopped reading news papers. I like to firm my opinions based on fact and reported news, not read an opinion based on sensationalist scare mongering.
Crystal wheels summed it up pretty well, though I shamefully admit some people surprise me so much with their attitudes that I have used the insult. |

The Daily Mail is the EDL in an M & S suit. It doesn't do truth it does ranty shouty nonsense. If you are darker than magnolia on a colour chart its stance is that you are a scrounging thieving immigrant probably with HIV and a bomb in your shoes.
I would not wipe my fat white arse on it. |

In a nutshell...
To me, it's the required reading for all those who think this country should be suspend at a point in time somewhere around 1955 when women knew their place, there was no such thing as a homosexual, politicians were fine upstanding people to be admired, and displaying a 'No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs' sign in your window was de rigeur....

Oh Gawd... I am starting to have feelings that I should go out and buy The Mail on Sunday!!! This is all stirring my deep-seated Utopian leanings..... I'll be writing to the BBC demanding that they bring back the closedown between 6-7pm so we can get 'the children' to bed next |

When I go to my favourite Greasy Spoon, it's the only newspaper (I use that term with care here...) available to read as it meets the strength of feeling, shall we say, of the owner of said Greasy Spoon... I know, I'll be blackballed* by all the **stereotypical sweeping statement alert**right-on Grauniad readers **alert ends** now

Of course the Mail is right of centre. Is it compulsory for all newspapers to be left wing? but to call it "far right" or the "EDL in suits" is just the usual left wing tactic of tarnishing everything that doesn't agree with them bullshit.
What is wrong with Simon Heffer reminding us that the Labour party is ideologically bankrupt? or Richard Littlejohn highlighting the more ridiculous antics of local government or the police? or even Peter Hitchens stand on the back door legalisation of certain drugs?
I am fully aware that the Mail goes a bit OTT sometimes, but the British public do need a counter balance to the left wing biased BBC.
No doubt the Labour party would like us all to read the Guardian or even the Mirror with the ridiculous Kevin McGuire as its political editor.
To all the knockers I would say think yourselves lucky that Britain still has a free press, because (if some on the left get their way) you will have only one choice. The British version of Pravda.

before I even knew about immigration issues etc etc..it was probably back in 1996 or something I read the article about this astounding 3yr old child who had completed the classic nintendo64 game goldeneye
I and the game press laughed at how fucking ridiculous it was
and of course I'd laugh at anyone who believed that story, since then the paper has reported some fantastic others stories, however the stories not as innocent as the 3yr old gaming genius actually disgust me for most of the times.I dont buy newspapers but will read them if they are around thats why I know whats in it most of the time.
Hell its even made up stories(scottish daily mail)about pretending to get wind of a social that was planned but was cancelled by the premises.Photographs of a couple of masked hot girls walking down the stairs at the 'wifeswapping' party looked great though!- the actual truth?, in my opinion, they smashed the event before it took place because there was NO story, it would have looked really boring watching people in masks n fancy gowns n suits all enjoying drinks in a totally social atmosphere.Henceforth they decided to expose the story in the pretence there would have been filthy shagging all over the place, in essentially a public setting.
the event took months, people lost money and also made some regular members fear for their privacy!- so....yes...I have little respect for the mail brand. |

If a newspaper prints a fact(not an opinion) then it shouldn't matter if it's the Mail,Guardian,Morning Star or the Times should it? I stand by what I say. Those who use it as an insult are hypocrites. They hate stereotyping but do it themselves. |

Wonders if now I will be classed as a xenophobic, edl homophobic scumbag for openly admitting I read the mail....and also the sun.
I know it is not to everyone tastes....but then I find the guardian not to be for mine.
Anyway I can form an idea for myself. I have a number of friends that are foreign, as well as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and also transgender(will use this in general term).
I also read other literature including ft, and Internet based sources as I like a rounded _iew of the news and not just what the mail says or does not say.

For me the Mail (and Express, Sun, Mirror, Star etc.) tabloids is less about political leaning and more about sensationalist journalism.
People that take in and believe these extreme headline stories just appear to me as gullible, and their threads often highlight this fact. |

Same here. Working class bloke from a council estate who has a son at the local school who finds Tracey Emin Damien Hirst and Tony Bliar pretentious arseholes.
However I "don't know my place" and therefore find the Daily Mail a bile filled rag. |

The post about the Mail being the EDL in an M&S suit is the most pertinent for me, there are other awful papers like the super soaraway Sun but they present themselves as rags, the darker thing for me about the truly awful (yes I am allowed my opinion) Daily Mail is it's veneerof respectability and making itself look like a 'serious' paper when pushing it's hate. |

I think were all guilty of picking up publications, and even if they are slightly radical, reading them in order to pass the time.
Whether you read it or not, there's strong circumstantial evidence that the mail particpates in influential, sensationalist journalism. This doesn't mean that everyone who reads it follows that train of thought.
I've picked up soldier of fortune, country living, national geographic,220 triathlon and BBC wildlife...not sure what that makes me. I'm from a middle class background, though I have a job so based on that I guess I'm working class.

Does reading The Mail an odd time when it has been left around make a person an expert on what goes on in it?
Personally I havn't a clue whats in it o can't comment....but surely people can make their own minds up even when reading something?
You hardly see anyone admitting to reading news or watching telly on here...so how do those people know anything at all that goes on in the news as the internet doesn't always tell the truth either? |

The press is biased and most of us will read and agree with the publications that fit with the _iews we already hold. The purpose of a newspaper is not to inform or educate it is to sell newspapers and they do it by pandering to their readership.
The sun and star sell on boobs sex and titillation. Express on royals, maddie and house prices. Independent on green issues.Guardian on lefty issues and the Mail on immigrants, paedophiles, PC and moral panics.
They all lie and fabricate (I have personal knowledge of 2 totally fabricated stories). There was a famous hoax where fake stories were released on a news service. Totally fabricated and yet, not only did the newspapers print it but some added facts including inter_iews and comments.
As much as I don't like the mail it was about theonly one to not print the fake stories. |

I stopped believing anything the media reported when I was 21 and a close friend was killed in a car crash involving some famous people. The press got even the basic checkable facts wrong and I thought then if they are making this up what else are they fabricating. |

The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country,
The Times is read by people who actually do run the country,
The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country,
The Financial Times is read by people who own the country,
The Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country
The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.

"I read the Express, on the rare occasion it's sold out then I pick up a Mail...I still somehow manage to have reasoned thinking processes - it is possible you know"
the express is stuck in a timewarp... the fixation it still has with princess diana borders on scary..... |

if you are on the right.... you get accused of reading the mail.... I liken it to UKIP where it gets on a populist bandwagon without ever thinking of the consecquence....
it is very "nimby/little englander"
which is the complete opposite to the mail online, which is celebrity sniping and very sarcastic
mind you... i read the guardian, so that makes me a "pinko-marxist leftist commie hippy!!!!".... |

"Serious question to all
After reading threads and to be honest enjoying the odd discussion I have to ask why when people say something that's not agreed with they're accused of reading the mail ?
Thank you for explaining in advance
An oldie, but goldie:
The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country,
The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country,
The Times is read by people who actually do run the country,
The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country,
The Financial Times is read by people who own the country,
The Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country
The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.
Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits....!!!

Yes I've seen that one before but still just as funny, and quite true |

" Reading it is fine, being influenced by it is the problem. Form your own opinions from life's experiences, not by the word of someone trying to be controversial in order to make money."
absolutely. I used to read the Daily Mail because it was a good read but I didn't read the political bits as I've no interest in it, haven't bought a newspaper for years and only buy the Sunday Mirror now |

Nothing wrong with The Mail, because my dad reads it, hes 84,and old people have to keep themselves active.
Enjoy all the adds for stairlifts, incontinence pads etc. |
