Tesco lads mag protests
Jump to: Newest in thread
I'm in two minds over this. I don't like the objectification of women for sexual purposes but I think womens magazines do far more harm.
I think we need attitudes to change at base level rather than trying to force.ag return to a society where the female form is considered so dangerous and inflammatory that it needs to be hidden away.

the mags have agreed to tone the covers down that should be enough.
Feminists want women to do what ever they like yet they cant sand it when some women want to pose on the cover of lads mags. wish they would make their mind up |

Nuts mag and all the rest must live this, free publicity all the way
Radio 2 were talking about it a couple of weeks ago when the Co-Op banned them for ages.
Turns out they are less derogatory to women than Cosmo and mags like Heat as they constantly bitch about stars etc |

They've obviously got nothing better to do. I'd love for them to be outside my local Tesco and one of them ask me for my signature. I'd ask them about women's mags that basically tell girls they're fat if they don't look a certain way, the oiled, half naked men that adorn womens mag cover/pages.
What about the aftershave ad that shows a guy walking into an arena and he's wearing next to nothing? Invictus I think it is? Isn't that man being objectified? |

And they [the womens mags] point out when a female celebrity has gotten a bit of a belly or has a saggy ass.
I'd love to see the women that actually work for these mags. Bet they're not as perfect as they try to tell others to be |

In the article I have just read it doesn't mention modesty bags......it says this....
A protest against the sale of lads’ mags is being staged at numerous Tesco stores around the country.
In an effort to force Britain’s largest retailer to ditch magazines such as Zoo and Nuts, the Lose the Lads’ Mags campaign are pitching up in cities ranging from Manchester, London, Portsmouth and Glasgow from midday for one hour.
The campaign, spearheaded by women’s rights groups Object and UK Feminista, is against the sexualisation and objectification of women, as well as the exposure of such images to children.
The group says that lads’ mags ‘fuel sexist behaviours and attitudes underpinning violence against women’, adding: ‘Tesco would never allow “girlie calendars” on their office walls. Why are they choosing to stock degrading, pornographic lads’ mags on their shelves?’
Activists will be talking to consumers outside Tesco stores and collecting signatures in what the group says is a ‘family-friendly protest’. |

But I would take issue with the "obviously got nothing better to do" comment. The right to protest is very important in my opinion and should never be patronised or belittled. |

Good for them, I'm all for people standing up for their viewpoint and making an effort to change opinion just as long as they are willing to accept that if the majority don't agree with them in the long run they have to accept that. |

If women object to this why do their fellow females appear in them? Just another feminist plot to have a go at men. If they want equality get objecting to the female only mags that cost husbands/partners lovers mega bucks. Why pick on Tesco's are they the only outlet with these mags? |

No but lets face it there is a Tescos on nearly every street, they will get more publicity this way I would imagine.

Last I knew kids weren't too bothered about half naked women on mags. More likely to go straight to the kids mags.
Also, have you ever watched a music video from a female artist like rhiana? There's half naked people in that but that's ok right? |

These women who protest about this are themselves placing their will on other women.
Lets be real once they have the images removed from the cover the next step will be to ban the entire content.
By doing this they are not allowing other women to do what they want.
Alot of girls/women make a good living out of modelling and enjoy the career they have chosen i dont think many models would say they ate forced into it.
What next. No male pics on body building mags. No pics of dogs on crufts magazine. Its rediculous these women are worsr than any publishing company as they are in reality trying to prevent many women do what they enjoy dping and thats earning a great living doing something they enjoy.... Butt out i say |

The watershed is pretty damn lax in this country by many examples but that's what Ofcom is there for.
The only thing is, unless they're going to do like they do with sites like this and put a REPORT button on your remote, the number of complaints is always going to be minimal right up until someone does a "Jade Goody".
If these feminist institutions just ganged together and rang or emailed Ofcom or the ASA every day and petitioned that way, the whole fucking country would wind up censored into oblivion.
So yeah, I'd like to see that happen for a laugh, see where it gets them. |

Forgive me if I seem that way, my dislike for some overzealous feminists will never be overzealous. But they don't realise that they're just giving lad mags free advertising while they're trying to empower themselves. It's just a distraction for them and an inconvenience for some people that might like to read these mags. |

When the lads and womens gossip mags both have similar bikini shot covers on why force one into modesty covers and not the other? |

No nor I. The problem with any radical section of a group is that it tars the other sections of the group with the same brush and what they stand for and try to achieve becomes clouded. |

Lets be realistic a proportion, possibly fairly small,of the protesters will very definitely want to control what we read and ideally what we think. There are still plenty out there with very traditional conservative (please note the intentionally lower case c) right view of the world. |

Is it just me that is struck by the irony of arguing about the sexual objectification these magazines promote, in a forum where many people's avatars and profiles are chock full of pictures of 'tits and bits' often for the purpose of attracting a partner for sex? |

one of the main points of this site is sexual objectification and we all choose to be here. The objection to lads mags is a much deeper issue than has been discussed here in my opinion and I honestly think that the objectors are focussing on the wrong issue or the wrong aspect of it at least.

Feminists are only focussing on lads mags at present as they feel they will gain support from a larger proportion of society. And to be honest i think covering front covers of lads mags is a good thing. No issue there.
However i was watching a discussion on tv last week and its not just the covers feminists want to ban, they want to legislate against all female nudity in public arguing its making females nothing more than sex objects.
Why should these women impose their will upon other women who enjoy showing off their bodies. No one is askiing or forcing feminists to remove their clothes. They themselves are akin to cictatorial regimes preventing freedom of choice. If women want to pose and earn a good living they should be allowed and not be told by these narrow minded bigots what they are allowed to do. |

one of the main points of this site is sexual objectification and we all choose to be here. The objection to lads mags is a much deeper issue than has been discussed here in my opinion and I honestly think that the objectors are focussing on the wrong issue or the wrong aspect of it at least.
" to be fair lads mags do objectify females but no where near as much as womans mags the reason for alot of females feelings of "im too fat" perhaps this is an area that should be addressed and not whether guys find the female form attractive |

Well I am amazed that war, world hunger, abuse, violence and all the major things that really matter have been sorted out so we can all start on the little things like magazine covers. I was always taught if you do not want to see something don't look at it. If they think the mags are that bad take them to court and see how far they get.
In fact I think I might write to loaded and complain that they do not do a Braille version |

"Feminists are only focussing on lads mags at present as they feel they will gain support from a larger proportion of society.
If women want to pose and earn a good living they should be allowed and not be told by these narrow minded bigots what they are allowed to do."
Then'll become femorists (feminist terrorists) and blow up newsagents and offices that don't bend to their will

"I wonder how these protesters feel about women being topless on public beaches.Do they protest whilst on holiday?"
There's a huge difference between nudity in general and the way women are represented in these magazines. Air brushed, pouting - theyre generally portrayed as sex objects for the amusement of men. |

"And while they're at it, they should also cover-up all those pregnancy magazines and women's gossip mags, far too much celebrities in bikinis, skin & breasts on show "
The pregnancy mags can stay.
The gossip mags with naked vaccuous celeb twats can go ... |

"Just read that women's rights groups Object and UK Feminista are protesting outside Tesco stores about the modesty bags on lads mags.
Thoughts?"
I can think of far nicer locations to stage a picket…. |

Its complete bollocks. wonder how many have actually read nuts or zoo? The majority of the mag centres on football aftershave jokes and gadgets. Holidays and stuff like that. Id say its very like the free magazine shortlist which is handed out at train stations and pubs for free.
When scantily clad women do adorn the covers they are usually promoting their new movie/album/sing/book etc and using the mag to further their cause. Also getting to keep the attire used in the photoshoot.
As has been said the womens Macs are far more derogatory (ok mag calling for Kate to lose the baby fat the day she gave birth!)
Feminists di far more damage to the female cause can these magazines ever could. Totally against any censorship. Every billboard and bus shelter has overt imagry for advertising they are singling out so called lads Mags which will only get pubescent kids searching them out to see what the fuss is all about. Now...tits oot! |

Sexual equality still has a long way to go.
in many sections of business, the inequality between the sexes is patently unfair.
Gender based wages,promotion,
and boardroom positions, are so obviously male biased.
in fact, with today's equality laws, more often than not, they are blatantly illegal.
That this bias is allowed to exist, astounds me,it's illegal,it's not right,
and should not be tolerated.
Now modesty covers on lads mags,I agree with,I don't want to have to explain anything of a sexual nature,to a 5 year old,in the middle of a tesco's aisle.
parents should still decide the time and place for that discussion.
Having said all that,I do find it strange, with all of the above mentioned bias, and inequality, that some females still feel the most important issue for them,is a modesty cover on a lads mag,???
